2014 Stang to be smaller car..

If nothing else, it gives a lot of people the push to buy now and not take a chance on waiting, there by boosting sales. They can still scrap the new idea if sales of the current style peak and they play with the tuning again to get the mileage into the guidelines.

Then again, they could hit us with a repeat of the II.

I think the Mustang II saved the nameplate. Ford could have dropped the Mustang. They needed a car for the times. They sold tons of them during a time when people were freaking out about gas prices. I think they lacked performance but so did the other pony cars of the day. The suspension design and size wasn't the problem. Styling wise they had a lot of the traditional Mustang look. In fact more than the 71-73 they replaced. But keep in mind the government and insurance company's forced the carmakers to react and they did. They were forced into meeting crash bumper requirements, smog motors, etc. and they all had BIG shock absorbing bumpers and detuned engines and of course smaller was better.
Now we have a lot of technology. composite materials, computer control, etc. They have got so heavy to incorporate all the design for safety. I think they can design a car to be smaller and lighter without being a slug. The current pony wars are responsible for renewed interest in car buyers and they need that more than ever. Even the Asian car companies are trying to make a car for the Mustang market. I think they will have their hands tied a bit because of all the CAFE and EPA requirements but this is a different time than the 70's. While the MII's did sell, I don't think Ford want's the stigma attached to them. I think they have their act together. Just my 2 cents though.

Agree with your points made.

I'm also thinking that Ford is setting up a base chasis that can be used by more than one model car. Also think that hybrid has a future with the Mustang even with the word power in it. Porsche is in it (hybrid) big time setting themselves up for the future. My guess is Ford would be smart to do the same.

Let us bow our head and pray "Dear Lord PLEASE don't ever let there be a Hybrid , green, tree hugging Mustang Amen" :craz

I just don't see the hybrid thing being a good deal in a muscle car at this point in the game, the current models of hybrids add alot of weight to the car. Initial purchace price is higher, Repair cost are more. If you go to the Holy grail of green crap like the Chevy Volt and and the Nissan Leaf with the so called "0" emission you get into the biggest LIE of all. I know all the Green Freaks and hollywood loving Al gore types love to think that they saved the environment by getting one of these cars, but I have to ask Just where the hell do they think electricity comes from??? I mean beyond the magic of that little plug in the wall LOL!!

But back to the 2014 Mustang I figure I'll be mad either way. I have a 2011 5.0 so if they make the 2014 a econo box ( I dont think Ford will do this) I'll be Mad at what they did to the Great Mustang. If they Make it Faster and Better It will be great, but I'll be pissed I didnt wait till 2014 to get one :lol

And all you guys with the old Mustangs got the best of it all cause you just can't beat the cool factor of a nice vintage Stang..

:wtf the new plastic 5.0 ain't cool :fbomb me LMAO!!!! I'll suffer through the embarrassment of driving the heap.. :craz

That's what I tell everyone about the '66 since I drive it all the time..... Just some old junker I putt around in......

I agree that the new cars are tanks. They've been getting bigger and heavier ever since '94. I'd still kill for a new 5.0, but the Mustang could do with some trimming. Not sure how they're going to pull it off, though. The motor is big, and when combined with all off the related systems, it needs a good sized engine compartment to hide in. In addition, safety features and the need for rear seats keep it at mid-size car size instead of pony-car size.

Now that is cool Hybrid technology there LOL!! You can get this sort of Hybrid Technology right now for any Mustang they bottle it :)

I was at the new car introduction show in Detroit that Ford makes yearly to its management employees. My father took me every year. I remember when they drove the Mustang II across the stage and almost everyone in the audience stood up and cheered wildly. It did save the company at the time, and it saved the Mustang name. We even owned a 1974 Mustang II Ghia.

I didn't cheer...I was crying.

in my younger days I had a 1980 Monza with a 4 banger I switched to a V6 4speed, my BIL had a 79 Monza with a 305 V8 and 4 speed, a friend with a 76 Cobra II (that we put a 351W 4 speed in) and another friend with a 77 Mach 1 V6 4 speed. They were fun cars. I abused the Monza and baby'd my 67 so that could be why it was fun! I always wanted a King Cobra. Still do... but not a 2014 version.

My first car was a 79 Mercury Bobcat the refined upscale version of the Pinto... 4 speed standard 4 banger motor. You just cant pimp harder than that... :lol
