2014 Escape

When we moved to Ames last July, we sold both Foci and bought a 2014 Escape S. Plain jane, nothing fancy, just basic transportation that works better with the dog. Lots of room and more comfortable to boot. I joined the Escape forum so I could read about the ins & outs of the car. It's great for finding all the little tips and tricks, especially the electronics.

But what I find hilarious, is that so many people with these things spend a ton of money on cold air intakes, sway bars, shocks, tuners, exhaust etc....Seriously?? On a frigg'n Escape??? It's a small SUV with no power, a decent ride and decent gas mileage. That's it man. If you want a hot rod, buy a damn hot rod!

I'll never understand that mentality.

What motor does your escape have--I have a 13 with a 2.0 ecoboost-- 240 hp on prem. 1/4 times of 15.2 it will push near120 mph pretty quick, no I would never put on a cold air intake or any performance parts but the performance was a selling point, the sync phone system is pretty finicky and I heard that ford is dropping Microsoft software. And I don't look at my escape as a performance vehicle.

I have the NA 2.5L engine. Not a pig mind you, but I would never call it fast. I test drove all of the various engines and were not much better. I would never describe any of these vehicles as "performance" that's just funny!

I do like the car, just find it funny that folks spend money to make it go faster and handle better. Better seats, tint the glass, better stereo (although the factory unit sounds great already), that I can see doing. I've had good luck with the snyc system and my iPhone, nice features that I've not had before.

Glad to hear you like it. We've got an '05 with 120K on it that the teen daughter will learn to drive on and take to HS at least until college probably but I'm tempted to sell it and get the new model for mileage (I've only gotten better than 20mpg by driving 60mph once on the hwy.). The '05 is road noise/wind noisy on the hwy. but very pet friendly and I put a 2" receiver on it so I've towed decent sized uhaul trailer with the V6. I was really close to getting the '14 or a CX5 but decided better to let the daughter ding the '05 up first then think of a college car for her. I really like the restyle of the new model.

Jon,

On my last trip to KC (500 round trip) I got 27mpg. That's with the snow tires still on the car!

Sounds like with tires of less rolling resistance 30 hwy would be achievable. That makes it more tempting. If the wife wanted to give up her '09 Mustang for one later I'd lean that way. Daughter will probably get a Focus hatch for college 2017, used 1 or 2 years of course...

My wife drives our 13--2.0 Eco boost-awd-escape to work(Highway miles) and rarely sees 24 mpg. I would have to say the stereo is pretty good but I am not over impressed with most of the rest--

I'm sure the AWD reduces the mpg quite a bit with the additional differential and driveshaft. Is the vehicle noisy on the inside? Ride like a truck?

My 14 is FWD and is pretty quiet with a decent ride. Not like my F250 at all!

The old saying "ride like a truck" is kind of gone by the wayside, my 13 crew cab 4x4 rides as nice as any car I have owned--and gets 20 mpg on the highway--that being said the escape is shorter , lighter, and has the 18 inch low profile tires, still not too bad of ride, overall my wife loves it for the size and radio --she loves the heated leather and remote start which we have skipped in the last couple cars we have had--I would suggest you go drive one and also an edge if you like them at all.
