Bruce of Modern Driveline can help steer you in the right direction.

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

I'm running a Spec Stage 2 with a Spec aluminum flywheel in the T56. No complaints here, but the flywheel does take some getting used to. The Stage 2 clutch is a kevlar clutch, for extra grab and longevity but doesn't have the aggressiveness/chatter that a puck-style clutch has. Spec is pretty popular for the late model crowd, but don't hear too many running them in the classic stangs. Most people in the classic crowd run the Centerforce Dual Friction clutches.

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

I spent a lot of time reading posts about clutches and I figured after everything I read I was going to go with a diaphragm & centerforce style.

I walked into http://www.ottsfrictionsupply.com/ there were 3 guys behind the counter that I talked to and they even ended up grabbing a shop hand out of the back to talk to me about the advantages / dis advantages of the different types of pressure plates and clutches.

After talking for more than an hour about clutches and yes, Ford did actually put a 390 in a Mustang in '67, they sold me on a 3 finger pressure plate and clutch setup that they built for me.

I knew the name of a fleet customer of theirs so I ended up leaving spending $177.00 on everything.

My car is not running yet so, I can't really speak on how it performs. Everyone I talked to locally said that these were the guys here to talk to though.

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

Centerforce would be my first choice. I could't go centerforce this time around due to my hydraulic throw out bearing so I went RAM and have never had any problems. I have around 500+ hp and never had any slip with either.

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

How much power are you making, and what kind of tires are you running?

One of the guys on Mustangforums has a 400+ft-lbs 383 stroker and Mickey Thompson S/R's that has broken just about everything drivetrain related. He's finally settled on a McLeod dual-disc clutch, after going through a couple others. Supposedly it's not a bear to actuate, and it grabs well enough to allow the input shaft on his toploader to snap:)

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

I am sure there are a few good clutches you could buy.

Mine is a CenterForce with my TKO600.

Don't forget the spline count!

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

I have been running the Centerforce Dual PN:DF490030 clutch, plate and bearing against a Steel MacLeod flywheel (small block Ford 331) and replaced my stock clutch linkage and Z-Bar with a what I think is a really trick unit using heim joints and sealed roller bearings from Barillaro Speed out of Knoxville, TN. Barillaro's Z-Bar setup is very smooth, I'm running 426HP with a 3.89 Eaton Tru-Trac and CalTrac bars. The Centerforce can easily handle to 500HP and you would have no problems with this combination.

Re: Lets Talk Clutches

Was the Barillaro set-up common to all of the early Mustangs, or was it year-specific? I've seen their ads but never looked further into using them than that. Every year Mustang clutch linkage was different (damn Ford engineers couldn't make up their minds, I guess).
