99GT swapping in DOHC from Aviator

With the Bobcat running reliably I am going to turn my focus on getting my other son's car going. We got the head with the bent valves rebuilt. He has ordered a new Cloyes timing set. Gasket set, Mach 1 intake, rings and bearings. We decided to just pull the motor and go thru it. We were going to get the Aviator running but winter isn't going to be much longer so we will just rebuild the motor and put it in the GT. here is the Mach 1 intake next to the Aviator. He has all the shaker hood stuff too. All OEM.

Well the 99 had been sitting neglected for some time. Lucas and his buddy are going to pull the engine back out, drop the K member and assemble it that way. His friend has a lift. We dragged it over there tonight

we had set the engine in with the headers on, thinking that would be easier than trying to put them in later. We ended up having to remove the left header from the engine to allow it to fit in but left the header in the engine bay. With the headers, steering and everything else in the way we couldn't get the trans to fit. The bell housing on the this trans is bolted on from inside flywheel area so it has to be on the trans when installing it unlike most other manuals I've done where you could bolt the bell on first. Anyway, we might have been able to lift motor up, pull headers off/out so we could get the trans in but his friend offered the lift so we figured we would do the K-member method. We got it about ready to set the car back down on it. I'll be glad when this thing is buttoned back up. What a pain!
 
It's a very tight fit. I figured the best way to do it would be to drop the K member, I think you are confirming that. Make sure both valve covers are on before you raise it into place!

Yes we did put em on. It is a miserably tight fit!!!

thanks! Yeah, he had to take a break for finals in May and then we did the Hot Rod Power Tour in early June. I think he needed a little time for the wallet to catch up too! Hearing it run has really made him motivated again though. He needs to get a few more things like a throttle cable, the GT and Aviator cables are both too short and there are some coolant line stuff that is also unique to the Mach 1 that he needs to get. I will fabricate an alternator bracket and maybe some other brackets. The Mach 1's were only 03 and 04 and limited production. Dealers don't carry this stuff anymore and used stuff is pricey! He has a lot invested but we all do that I think. It's going to be a pretty cool car, a lot like I did almost 30 years ago building mine. Taking some of the best Ford stuff and sticking on a Mustang I had (or could afford).

I assume he's looked at www.Mach1registry.com for the needed parts? You are right about the parts being pricey.

Well, he finally got all the loose ends sorted. He drove it to work today. First time it's driven under it's own power in about a year! But I'm proud of him. he did most of the work himself, did all the research and spent a TON of his own hard earned money. He did it while going to college full time and working a ~30 hour a week part time job. It will be one of just a few I imagine with a DOHC swap. Still needs to break-in the motor and get an exhaust. He drove it with the hood off and open headers. It sounded mean!
