Hell of a Monday - Thrust Bearing gone!

What is the best method to mesure the end play while the engine is in the car? It seems like everyone has a opinion on this. ;)
 
I use a magnet based dial guage on the block and pry the flywheel out then push it forward.
From that pic you posted of the blockplate wear from the backside of your flywheel, it has some internal problems.
My guess its eather the thrust bearing worn or the crankshaft had been turned too far on the #3 main where the thrust bearing face is.
 
I would take the balance off the front and put the indicator base on your oil pan and the dial indicator on the crank snout.
 
As long as you have your dial indicator and block firmly held stationary it really doesn't matter so long as you are measuring the travel of the crank itself.
 
Can some one please tell me why I only hear this noise when I press in the clutch and not all the time.
 
Pushing clutch pushes the pressure plate into the flywheel which in turn puts force onto the crank and thrust bearings...
 
With no load at idle the crank is probabaly near the center. When you press in the clutch, the throwout bearing applies pressure to the fingers on the pressure plate, Since the pressure plate fingers are spring loaded and firmly attached to the flywheel / crank, the whole assembly will move forward until the crank meets the thrust bearing, and then the pressure plate fingers will start moving under heavy load in order to seperate the pressure plate from the clutch disk...
When the pedal is released, the crank probably just floats back to it's natural running position.
 
Thanks everyone - this has been a wonderful education. I just received a phone message that the noise is gone, and it was a easy fix. So as soon as I finish up work, I'll head over there to get the scoop. don't have much details, but he mentioned something about the starter?

Do come back with details. Realize, you can have wear that will allow a small amount of crank movement but if you really have as much as first stated...IDK
 
I know, I know... I just got off the phone with him, They had to use a shim to get the starter to clear. That is what was making all the noise.

But, it makes me think....

What was the marks on the flex-plate from? I never saw the flex plate off the car until now, so I don't know if that was a old flex plate, and someone decided to reuse, and my car made those marks or what the full story is.

Also - I got a box O' parts with this engine, two different Starters, and just grabbed the one that looked the best. From a quick google search, it does seem there is a difference in auto/manual starters. Lots of threads on a few of the mustang forums.

Iam going to make him measure the crank end play in front of me. I might of been hasty in saying 1/4, I'll get some facts and report back. -Mark
 
Hope it was that simple. Like you said, have them measure the end play in front of you just for piece of mind.
 
Yep - T5 Block plate.

Yesterday's drive home was interesting, It seems I have a short in my electric fuel pump wiring.

But, aside from that, it drove fine. I arrived to late to have them measure the Bearing in front of me, but Iam still going to get that done.
