'69 headrests in a '68

Wanted headrests in my '68's.

Background, '68 seats are different then '65-'67 and '69 and later. The TMI sport seat headrests don't fit '68's (they look kinda funky IMO) and the '69 single posts don't work in a '68 either.

OEM '68 headrests are really hard to find. $$$$$

As the '69 headrests and mounts are now available repro, looked at how to modify the '68 seat to add the '69 headrest.

So, in a nutshell;

Buy 2x 105 x 200 x 2.8mm (4" x 8" x 3/32") plates, 4x 3/8" 1 1/2"L bolts (could go 1"), 4x 3/8" nyloc nuts, 8x 3/8" flat washers, and 8x 1/4" nyloc nuts.

Cut upper edge of seatback to notch to accept the headrest bracket.

Place plate under bracket and over seatframe. Mark 4x 1/4" holes for bracket and 2x 3/8" for mouting to the seat.

Drill 4x 1/4" holes and 2x 3/8" holes. (I had to file the ovals in the seat abck just a bit to get the 3/8" bolts thru, went bigger rather than smaller)

Mount bracket to plate, then assembly to seat.

Cost? $20 for 2 seats (excluding headrests and brackets). Time to install, maybe 30 minutes.

Very solid and while not "engineered" they are very sturdy and I have no qualms about using them.

May look into a source for a solid plate, this was what Bunnings (Oz version of Home Depot) had on-the-shelf in a size that fit. Could trim edges for a more appealing look but as its all hidden this prototype is going in the '68.

An easy add-on if you are redoing seat covers, and way less cost/hassle (at least here in Oz, buying and shipping one set of '69's cost me $700, thus this plan for the other 3 cars!) than trying to find '69 seats to swap in. Upholstery would probably need to come off to add it to exiting in use seats.

Revised seat w/'69 headrest against original, w/TMI sport seat foams and upholstery.

Have a set of '69 headrests, and plan on doing the same to my '68. Thanks for posting, will save me some time!

I've been considering this idea for a long time as well, but I wasn't aware that the '69 headrests were available as repro - where did you get them from?

Thanks,

Andrew

Sorry, but I don't see how you can say that TMI sports headrests don't fit '68 seats. They do and fit very well.

The brackets are slightly different due to the thicker 68 seat, but TMI sells both the 65-67 and the 68 brackets. They will even trade out the right bracket if (when) they ship the wrong one. Ask me how i know.

Seriously? They got you too?

I've been very happy with my '68 sport headrests. They look great in the car, in the garage...

I'm curious about the seat belts in this picture. Where are they from?

Dredging up and old post... on the '68 bracket, what it the part number?

I have spoken to TMI on a number of occasions and their sales person I speak to has consistently stated the sport seat conversion headrests do not fit a '68...

Do you have any pics of the the install, as I am going to be doing another car soon and would prefer to buy their kit rather than fabricate up another set of '69's to get the more correct dual post look for a '68.

I have installed the 65-67 headrests from TMI in 2 sets of 68 seats. Did a seat just today.

That bracket John posted the picture of is the bracket you need, the '67 bracket is about an inch shorter in the long part of the L shape

I know this is old, but are the brackets you are talking about that fit a 68 the Sport Seat Foam brackets (TMI PN 50-2110-001) as opposed to the Standard seat foam brackets (TMI PN 50-2110-000). I'm sorry the above photo links don't work, I have the standard brackets and yes they are too short and don't stick out far enough. If the longer Sport seat foam brackets do fit well without modification would it please be possible for someone to give me the dimensions of the longer brackets so I can modify the standard ones to fit as I could do this much faster than waiting for replacement brackets from TMI. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Thank you so much for your reply, however it has only confused me, the bracket pictured on the NPD link is the standard seat bracket which I already have, but NPD call it SPORT seat headrest to fit on STOCK seats? good each way bet as to what they're actually selling there.
(The TMI install instructions show two differing mounting brackets one for SPORT Seat Foam which is bigger and probably the one I need and one For STANDARD Seat Foam). Of course this wouldn't be the first time that the picture doesn't represent the product or the vendors part number have no correlation to the manufacturers part number. I have been mislead like this before. If I could only get the dimensions I could have the things in today or if I could only be sure I was ordering the correct bracket I would patiently wait for it, but at the moment I am going nowhere.

Cheers,

OK which bracket is that?
I think I need to get this straight,
As it stands from the above reading;
1. The TMI headrests DO fit 68 seats. (in above posts)
2. But you have to use the bracket that is LONGER and sticks out further than the standard 67 bracket. (in above posts)
3. I was given a link to NPD that shows the SHORTER standard 67 bracket which I already have and does NOT fit 68 seat.
4. jan says he used the same bracket on both seat foams which is OK but doesn't mention which particular bracket.

Please, if anyone can help me and has one of these brackets lying around and can give me the side profile dimensions of one of the longer, wider brackets, I would appreciate it immensely, as all I've got to go on at the moment is the drawing and part number on the installation sheet and an above post that says the standard 67 bracket is "about an inch shorter" than the bracket that fits.
I have queried TMI to order some of the longer brackets but after three days they still haven't replied, so this is my only option at the moment.

Cheers

Neither John or I have the bracket laying around since we installed them in out '68 seats. When i bought my headrests they came with two sets of brackets, you have to use the "longer" one. I'm sorry thats not much help. The "longer" bracket is about an inch longer than the one you have, if you put the one you have in place, you should be able to see where it needs to be longer. Between myself, john and craig, we have 4 sets of these done and none of us took a damn picture....
