Coilover Install Help needed

Trying to install the tcp coilovers in my car. Cant get the bolt holes to line up in UCA, Strut rod, and lower shock mount. the bolts go through the Strutrod UCA with no problem they will not match the holes in lower shock mount. I've turned it every way it can be turned. any else have this problem.

The 67 LCA to strut rod has wider hole spacing than the 65-66 cars. If you have the correct length lower control arm and the holes on the bracket are too close together, I'd reckon they may of sent you the wrong bracket.

Give them a call. Or, if their stuff has part numbers on it look up the correct part number needed in the instructions.

I called TCP the mounts are for a 65 or 66 mustang. I had to order another set to fit 67.

Order, as in have to purchase additionally? If they sent you the wrong ones, why are you having to "order" the correct ones?

How do you find yourself with '65 mounts in a '67 kit? Are you trying to fit a '65 kit onto a '67 Mustang?

Confused...

I have the TCP kit on my car. It's a '68 and I ordered a '68 kit and it all fit just fine. The springs they sold me were too stiff, but that's another story...

I bought the coilover kit on ebay from a guy that decided to install mustang ll instead.. Thats the reason they cant be returned. when i contacted TCP they said all the parts in the kit are for a 67 mustang except the Mounts. Somehow the mounts were put in there by mistake. The guy i bought the kit from called me today and said he can trade them for me. Either way its wouldn't have been a bad deal. He sold the coilovers to me for $900

You got a steal! I wish I could have come across a deal like that when I bought mine. I had to haggle hard with TCP and it still cost me well over double what you paid.

Speaking of coilovers....

The TCP coilover kit on my son's '68 suffered an unexplained VariShock strut failure. The VariShock's strut ripped out of the cartridge. The coilover was adjusted to the installation/adjustment specifications. We removed both shocks last week and sent them into TCP's VariShock lab up in Michigan. The shocks are in the mail on the way back to us as I type both having been rebuilt/repaired/serviced. The lab could not determine what caused the failure. Email correspondance with TCP contradicts their kit supplied installation/ride height adjustment settings. Installation instructions state:

Setting Ride Height:

Correct shock length at ride height is 14-3/16 +or- 7/16 and must be set with suspension carrying full weight of vehicle. This provides a vehicle ride height adjustment range (at the tire) of roughly 1 due to the motion ratio of the lower control arm. Altering ride height with the lower spring collar beyond this range will result in insufficient shock travel and possible damage to the shock or mounts.

Email correspondance from TCP states:

They replaced the bodies and said it looks like the body was loose on the one shock. But it’s hard to say what caused it. We have rebuilt them and they are good to go. Just make sure they have the proper installed height of 13.75-14.

When I questioned the difference... which at it's maximum is 5/8ths of an inch.... I got a muddied response from TCP.

The good news is that the kit was purchased approx. 3 years ago, TCP had a record on file of the purchase, and was very quick to warranty repair the struts. We paid ~$10 shipping to get the struts to the lab and TCP took care of the rest.

I had a great deal of discussion with TCP before and after purchasing my kit. I had lots of engineering questions. I also got some muddy responses.

It would appear that their shocks have limited travel range. That travel range really limits the use of the system. It's why they are so particular about how you initially set it up. Furthermore, it's why they always recommend such stiff springs with their kits - they need to limit the travel.

They originally sold me 450# springs which were WAY too stiff. I swapped them for 400's and would like to go even lower. But, they won't honor their warranty if I go any lower.

With their collars, there is way more adjustment potential than their literature suggests, but going outside their window exposes the shock to bottoming out or overextending - either one of which could result in damage. Of course, no one benefits from that, but mostly they don't want warranty issues caused by improper installation.

I think that generally their kit is great, but this limited travel thing needs to be fixed. If someone wants to run soft springs and have lots of travel, that needs to be OK.
