Thanks guys. One day I might even get it looking as good as yours. Think I might have to change the starter solenoid as it seems to be running on a bit and not disengaging immediately after the engine starts. Its not bad, but is annoying.

Not sure if its the solenoid or the clapper starter.

Should have said something earlier, but just wanted to say thank you to all for the welcome and the advice you have all given me since I joined. The members on this site are the best.

Without digging back into what motor you are running I am guessing it is the bendix on the starter hanging up, not the solenoid.

Thanks kb, the engine is a 302W and I'm still running the original type clapper with remote solenoid. So I should just go ahead and replace the starter? I was hoping that it wasn't the starter as its a pain to get in/ out. Not a lot of room under there. If I have too, might add some heat shielding to the motor as it sits awful close to the headers.

I have never heard of a Ford fender mounted solenoid to hang, but it is a common problem with the bendix. But if it was mine I would replace the solenoid first just because it’s cheap and easy. Even though it’s probably not the issue, it is easy to eliminate it as the problem. Then I would tackle the starter.

Thanks kb. Have just ordered both and I'll change them out once they get here. I can always keep the old units as spares.

New starter motor arrived. Its a big unit, so I hope there is enough room with the header. Stayed with the old clapper style and will use a heat shield this time.

Thinking it might be easier to drop the header to replace it.

I would do everything I could to replace it without dropping the header. They always seem to leak somewhere when you mess with them! It may not be possible, but tackle it from underneath, it may squeeze out of there.

Oh, those solenoids are known to arc closed it's rather common. Rap 'em with a wrench when it's messing up and 9 times outta 10 they'll release. I've kept one in damn near every Ford I've ever owned. Have one stashed in the current car now.

That's a sharp looking car! Makes me wish my heap was driveable.

Why not upgrade to a pmgr starter? Smaller, faster, better, easier to get, probably lasts longer.

I did think about it, but aside from some minor "upgrades" the car is pretty faithful to original design overall. But when/ if this one fails I might take a look at one.

BTW - I think your car is gonna be a killer once finished.

I can understand keeping it original.

My car may be awesome one day, but yours is killer now!

Just had a close look at the old starter and as suspected its sits hard up against the header which would make it a heat sink. Guess I didn't notice this before when putting it back together. I'm surprised the wiring has stood up.

Does anyone have a part number for the pmgr mini starters that you would recommend?

I know you can use the fox body starters. Just have to make sure itll work with your trans. I had one on the T5/302 I had in my coupe.
