Went in the ditch tonight---worst white-out I have ever been in!

I just simply drove into the ditch, it was pretty deep drifted snow and I stopped when I felt the front end sinking but it was too late. I have near highway tread so it doesn't take much. This was the worst driving conditions I have seen in my 40 years of driving---absolute 0 visibility for 1/4 of a mile at a time in places, 50 mile wind gusts--couple of inches of snow---ice on the road under it all---God I love Illinois. ---would have left work sooner but a guy was doing the paperwork on a truck he looked at yesterday--picking it up tomorrow--I have three to deliver tomorrow.

We had that last night. Couldn't see past the front porch! I was surprised when I got up this am that there was any snow on the ground, figured it would all be in a giant pile somewhere in Oklahoma!!

That's sucks Rod. Hope you didn't get hurt. We have the northern end of that storm here today. So far we have 13" of snow since midnight. Currently drifting pretty bad with 40-50 mph winds.
My wife had to work today too, luckily she made it home safe. Not a good day to be on the roads.

I have driven in a lot of storms here in Illinois but this topped them all, I have never seen whiteouts that lasted so long where you could not even see the edge of the road for reference. Talk about eye strain! I could not believe how bad the weather hit me--I was screwed if those 2 guys hadn't stopped. I was no help as I was having trouble just breathing--these 2 younger guys stopped and put a ball hitch in my reciever and pulled me out with a strap--I knew them both --I will see that they are paid for this as I was very glad to see them!

Did you get your car out of the ditch?

Couple of years ago we had a bad whiteout on the way home from the in laws in my wifes jeep. They live way out in the country. We got to a point where I actually could not tell if we were moving or if the wheels were just spinning and we were standing still. Pulled over and waited for it to pass. Kind of freaky.

My car is a 2011 f150 4x4 ---no aggressive tread--I was very lucky to have a couple of guys I knew stop and pull me out (even in a Dodge diesel) I would not have cared if it was a Yugo or a gremlin at that point!

We're getting some bad rain storms sweeping through the area right now. While checking the weather radar I saw the storm ya'll have been suffering through. I'll take the rain storms thank you very much! :thu

Everybody stay safe up there!

Winter storms are just the norm up here, but this one actually got blizzard warning status. It's been a long time since we had an actual blizzard. We have lots of people without power right now. Mine has been flickering all night. Hopefully it doesn't go out.

I always keep some tow ropes in the jeep just in case. I've pulled plenty of people out of drifts and low ditches. Even had to pull my own Volvo out of a drift a couple years ago.

Minnesota 1975.

In a place they deal with snow for 5 months out of the year, the system was overwhelmed. They closed school for 3 days.

Parents and adults everywhere were pissed! Us kids were ecstatic! :yah

Stay safe and glad you were ok.

Not to rub it in but it's a high of 65 and sunny here today with low supposed to be 37. It was cold early this a.m. but warmed up nicely when the sun came up.

Chicago style

Sorry to hear you had an issue.

I am finally going to get to mow the lawn so I can put up the rest of my Christmas decorations! Sunny and mid 60's today.

I feel sorry for you warm climate dwellers. Or at least your kids. I can't imagine being 5 years old and trying to rationalize the image of Santa and his sleigh and the lack of any real winter outside. I hate the shoveling of snow and trying to drive around life long Chicago natives who don't know how to drive in the winter but I could never give up the four seasons. Especially when we are lucky enough to have a white Christmas.

While I do agree about having snow for Christmas, I would trade this crap for the beach any day. I can always visit the snow at Christmas.

It's nice convertible weather outside today.... here at least....and the boys can actually attend a fielding practice / mini-camp tonight with a guy we know who plays triple A in the Giants organization.

Remind me again what's so great about being stuck in the house getting cabin fever for months on end :shrug
