UPDATE - Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

DEL65

Of The Morons
Today was the second to the last car show for me this season. After meeting my friends for breakfast this morning, I was driving to Turlock CA, which is about 15 miles away. While on the freeway, the nasty scent of radiator water filled the interior. No water was leaking from the heater box/core, so it was up front. I pulled over and noticed the timing cover gasket right behind the coil let go. Water gushed all over the motor. Crap.

I called AAA and had it towed back to the house. The tow truck driver was pretty cool and took good care of my ride. He wrapped the J hooks with towels to keep from scratching my LCA's and axle tube.

I was planning to go to Morgan Hill CA / 90 miles next weeked for a show and to drink some of Cmayna and KBMWRS'es beer. No time to fix it by then. Too much other stuff going on. Since I'm planning to have the motor rebuilt this winter, I'll get an early start on that project.

What a pisser that is. John, very sorry to hear of this. There will always be another meet next year but this time it will be on your dime!

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

:confu... Sure its not that little cap where your heater hose connects to the pump?
Also that area is prone to corroding thru the timing cover, may be worth checking.

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Bummer. I'm guessing your Chevy "friends" there won't forget this.

Are you sure it's not the water neck, hose, or that cap on the pump, as Mach suggested?

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Bummer, hope its only a loose hose clamp.

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Now that I've slept on it.......such a little hiccup shouldn't stop you from fixing it today so you can attend this Sat's car show...

Get er done!

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Thanks everyone for all the responses and suggestions. I'm positive that it's the gasket. While we were waiting for the tow truck, I filled the radiator and the TC cover immediately leaked; which looked like the scene form "The Beverly Hillbilies-Bubbling Crude"

Previoulsy, bad things happen when I rush a repair job or try to wrench on my car after-hours. (Remember that fiasco I had a few years back when a week before Knotts I f'ed up/bent my drag link and ultimately threw SAC69 under SWMBO's bus?)

I'm most productive and lucid on weekends, but unfortunately SWMBO and I have something else planned for today.

John:

I see a "mental health" day coming up this Tuesday for you! [You know, call in "sick" so you can get the car back on the road before Saturday....... ] Alternatively, you could still come on over in one of your daily drivers and hang with us until you've had enough of Morgan Hill!! One way or the other, you still ought to make it.

Regards, Jeff

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

IIRC, John was one that was making fun of my car always breaking....karma man, karma!

J/K, sorry to hear the crap news, but it could always be worse.

:wtf

Sorry your car crapped on you. Give me a shout and I can come down and help.

(BTW, couldn't resist the joke)

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

John,
Let me know if you'd like to work on the car sometime this week and I'll come over and help. I was also considering going to the show next weekend. If you choose not to get your car running, we could drive up together.

Let me know,

Vic

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

John,
Here's your golden opportunity. Vic is a #1 Mustang mechanic. Vic are you serious about coming to Morgan Hill? That would be awesome.

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Thanks for all the responses and offers to help. It means a lot to me.

I didn't think about it much yesterday, because SWMBO and I were doing other things. I've got non-Mustang stuff going on Monday thru Thur nights, which would not leave me enough time to fix and road test the car for Saturday. No big deal.

But am planning on heading out to Menlo on Saturday. Vic, I'll call you this week.

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Sorry about the Mustang crapping out.
Really love the color of the Mustang.
Actually see two mustangs and really love those blue's (Uh no pun intended)!

Menlo? You mean Morgan Hill? We are planning to meet at the Chevron gas station, near Hwy101 and East Dunne early Sat am so we can cruise in and park together.

UPDATE Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Today I found the culprit. It wasn't the timing cover gasket. Instead there's a pinhole in the water jacket that finally wore through. 45+ years of corrosion. Mach1rider guessed correctly.

Re: Car Crapped Out Today - Pics

Well heck, I would see if Ford would warranty that for you.

You could JB Weld it until more major work is required.

Hi Pete, thanks for the tip. No plans to fix. I had already planned on pulling the motor this Fall. This problem just moved it up a few months.

Well, better to "get er done" now during the winter months so we can cruise together this next summer.
