Time to ship me the doofus award

I was out in the shop working on the wife's coupe. We're installing a new motor and a different trans, since we're going from a 5 bolt bellhousing to a six bolt. The C4 that I have under the bench has a strange shifting lever. It's shorter than what's on a classic mustang, I'm thinking mid '70's. But I was using a B&M shifter, so that really didn't matter, and of course the wife wants to keep the shifter stock. I get the pan off and valve body out. Next, I go to get the shift lever out, but first I have to take off the nut for the kickdown lever. This is where it all goes wrong. The nut is on there fairly tight. I get the bright idea of grabbing the impact wrench -- the big one with lots of torque. To hold the kick down against tranny innards, I use the palm of my hand. BIG MISTAKE I hit the impact and it feels like I just smacked my hand with a hammer. I look down at my hand and underneath the latex glove it's slowly starting to turn red. Crap. I go into the house muttering and swearing under my breath, and the wife asked if I burned myself, again. She knows my all too well!! Nope, I have a deep laceration on the palm of my hand. It took six stitches to get the palm of my hand back to where it belongs.

I guess I have a week off from working on her car. I'll probably never hear the end of this!!!

We have not had a good 'ol doofus award in a long time. Yes of course we do need the :wop but the claim to the blood letting is what will make this a true doofus. :nut

Sorry, I didn't want to unwrap the bandage at work to clean it up and take a pic. You can see that it's an L-shaped tear and it was pretty deep. Here's the pics, I cleaned it up some.

I forgot to mention that when I went into the clinic I had on a "mechanics" bandage. I grabbed a clean paper town, placed it on the wound, and grabbed the electrical tape and made a couple wraps to hold it on.

The doctor told me to keep it dry for a couple of days. So, she suggested in the shower to put on a latex glove and a rubber band. I'm pretty sure that I couldn't find a rubber band if the world depended on it. Again, grabbed the electrical tape to hold on the glove. Talk about a challenge. I didn't realize how slippery a latex glove is when it's all soaped up. I don't know how many times the bar of soap went flying, yes flying, across the shower.

And the worst part is: no, the nut didn't come loose, so I still have to get that loose when I heal up!!! I just hope that I remember to try a different method to get the nut loose and not do the exact same thing!!!

Oh man, leaks aren't good.....especially when it's YOU and not the car!! :hide

Nice to read your temporary fix... true gear head fashion!! I'd give you two bonus points for that! :thu

I sliced a finger open Saturday on the block while knocking out pistons, treated mine the same way. An over zealous doc may have wanted to put a stitch or two in mine. WTF! It stopped bleeding!! When the wife found out she asked why I didn't come inside sooner and patch it up. I told her " because I still had five more pistons to get out!!"

:thu Good man.

Though I have been in the exact situation and mine is a nurse. So when I sliced my hand open one time, I sent her a text asking "how bad does a cut need to be before going to the ER". LoL. I think she called before I even laid the phone down...

nice job on the laceration. You shouldn't have gone to the clinic tho. That injury isn't worth it.

Back in Aug of last year, I was trimming the final pieces of hardwood flooring for our living room / formal dining room using a 10" table saw.

Of course, all of the safety gear had to come off the saw as the pieces were small.

I ran a piece across the blade and voila! A spray of blood all over my shirt.

needless to say, I nearly lost the last 1/2" of my right pinkie. I don't have any pics of the finger with the blood, etc. but have attached the 'after' pic.

I just put neosporin on it (layed the flap back over) and put a bandage on it.

OUCH!!!

It's funny how soft we are compared to steel! I have cut, bruised and impaled my poor body many times over the last five years. Never had to go to the hospital for anything other than a tetnis shot. Had se very close calls that could have been much much worse.

Are you saying that going to Stanford Hospital for a bad hangnail is a little extreme? :shrug

I have two words of why I went to the clinic: Hot Nurses :thu :thu

Why would I treat it myself, when the county gives us good insurance and I can go get treated by a hot nurse!! I've got my priorities straight!!

So, the hand was cut just to go to see the hot nurses......probably were not even close to the Mustang. Just drinking a beer and suddenly......"Hold my beer and watch this".....and off to see the nurses. The truth slips out....

Deb has to drag me kicking, screaming and bloody to the ER. Course, that does tend to happen frequently. My idea of paper towel or shop rag wrapped with duct tape is not on her approved list of bandage items.

in the words of my old baseball coach.. "just rub some dirt on it, you'll be fine"

Mine always said "it'll feel better when it stops hurtin"...... I use it on my kid now...

I've found that lacerations that do not require stitches are best handled by immersing the cut in greasy sludge from the engine compartment, which seals off the possibility of blood leaking beyond the sludge. After a couple more hours of wrenching, a bit of GoJo to remove the sludge and everything is fine.

yes indeed. Grease seals the wound.... I honestly believe my immune system is stronger by being 'infected' with all of the grease, etc that's entered my body thru cuts, gashes and gouges.
