So it started in NorCal where KBMWRS, JeffTepper,Crustycurmudgeon, MrShhhh,GTScode,GTScode wife SUV, John & Karen met up in Gilroy CA. to head for Knotts.
Cmayna was to meet us at the bottom of the Grapevine (name given to the I-5 over mountain section from San Joquine Valley to the LA Basin). Now understand that GTScode was very worried about the forecasted rain along the route due to his just almost completed 67 fastback. Seems it wasn't exactly water proof. And Cmayna wasn't happy with driving in LA traffic knowing it might be raining. Both valid concerns but seems the latest weather reports and StangFix pressure prevailed and they both decided to make the trip. You do know of Cmayna's rather lets say detailed effort in building one sweet '68 fastback. Every bolt/nut was checked and rechecked to be in alignment with the gods.
So the first event was the short but necessay run over a pass from the Santa Clara Valley to the San Joquine Valley. Well it started to rain. Not much but it rained. On the other side was sunshine, so no real problem. Then we met up with the DeLaMora brothers (John & Tom) and SacBill at the first rest stop....sans Mustangs, at their own. SacBill said he had a electrical problem (yeah right :sarc) with his 67 coupe and John said his wasn't trust-worthy since he thinks it has pushrod problems. Tom? I did't hear his reason for his '69 not going. :sarc. So they drove a friend's '07(?) Salleen convertible. :wth Then it starts..forst sleet then snow. Its actually packing on the sides of my front window, :steer. This last for about 10 miles and further ahead I see blue sky in the valley. Heading down it gets warmer and the snow melts and we are in sunshine again. :thu
So off we go heading south...first stop Kettlemen City for gas. I was in the lead with all following at a good 70mph. Ahead of me were two small SUVs and a mini-van. Then the mini-van drifts to the left, corrects to the right, corrects to the left...and viola they're in a tank slapper...finally a turn to the left and side skid hitting the left shoulder on over it goes. Down the embankment (south-bound side of highway is about 50 feet higher than the other side)....all grass.
Immediately we all pull to the side and run down to help. The van landed on its roof with a small side window busted out where people were emerging. We pulled 6 men and women out with various aches and cuts but seemingly okay. One young woman was still trapped inside with a rescuer inside offering support. She could not move and couldn't feel her feet. CHP and Fire arrived after about 45 minutes and we all got going. Whew...that was exciting.
Next at lunch at the bottom of the Grapevine we met up with Cmayna. Looking up the mountains (about 9,000 feet asl) there were some dark clouds. We headed up....with the last we se of the brothers putting the top down on the Saleen. On the road we see trucks with snow plows, with snow on them, heading the other way. :wtf The
On through LA on I-5.....smack into bumper-to-bumper traffic.....for miles...at a crawl....most of us have lost each other. I see Jeff behind me but lose him. Next I see Cmayna. We trade spots in traffic, helping each other. Craig's ahead now...but then stops. I see him move to the starter...and its dead. I move around him to get to the shoulder almost driving off an entrance ramp. I jump out to help push and with two passer-bys we get it to safety on a wide shoulder. Other of our group slowly drive by and pull over. Even Jeff who I called did some type of double back and came walking up the on ramp, sans Mustang. :wtf
After much discussion and calming Craig down we determine its the fuel pump. Easy fix. The flatbed is called and a tow truck shows up...it was a cruiser and wasn't who Craig called. The rest of us head to the hotel with SacBill doing some shopping for a fuel pump. Cmayna, wife and car show up at the hotel where we are waiting with fuel pump. Heck he saved himself 17 miles of driving. :roll :yah. Started to do the replacement but Craig decided to wait until morning and go to dinner. Next morning he replaces the pump and all is good.
Saturday Sacbill drives his Camry to a car wash and his windshield cracks.
Saturday on the way to our look-out point over the Pacific we come across a Dodeg Intrepid wedge uner a Volvo parked on the side of the road. It just happened.
Next at the look-out I drop my camera and bust it.
Rest of the weekend was okay.....I guess.
GTScode left early and busted a PS hose halfway home. He did a quick fix and made it home.
