starter issue

Putting a later model starter on my 289, not sure what year it is (89 or so) Its the same size as the original but with a little different hook up for the cable. I wanted to make sure it worked so I hooked jumper cables to it, + to the tab where the cable bolts on and - to the flange where it bolts to the bellhousing. Nothing. Took it to Advance auto and it tested just fine on their machine. The battery I hooked it up to is fully charged. Tried it again and still nothing ??

On the relais of the starter , you have a small terminal. When you hooked up the + and - with jumper cables , take a small piece of cable and connect the small terminal with the + it should run.
Qweeze the starter in a vise before operating/testing.

The starter out of an '89 doesn't have a relay on it. It's just like the older starters, so you should be able to just hook it up and test it. Are you sure that you have good connection with the jumper cables?

And like Bruno said make sure that you have it secure in a vice, or the torque of the starter will send it spinning across the garage floor....don't ask how I know that!!!
