Shorty headers

You pick up a very small amount of HP with the long tubes. Unless one is looking to get every last point of HP (serious drag racing) shorties are the way to go for the street from an installation perspective. Plus you can get better ground-clearance in most cases.

Definitely in a 66 they won't work. When I did the conversion to efi, the donor car (wife's 89 gt) had a very nice set of ceramic BBK headers. I really doubt that a '69 is wide enough for them to fit.
 
I had a set of fox body headers that came on the efi motor I'm putting in my 70, and they would not fit.
 
Depends on the motor they're attached to. It all has to do with scavenging exhaust pulses. Longer tubes are designed to scavenge better at higher rpm's, while shorter tubes scavenge better at lower rpm's. A high winding motor that breathes a lot is going to want long tubes for better hp in the higher rpm range. A more streetable, torquey motor is going to appreciate the short-tube headers for better low-rpm torque. Tube diameter also plays a role, but we'll pretend that all tube diameters are equal for now.

For example, my 331 that makes peak power at 5500 rpm and spends a fair amount of time between 4-6k rpm gets long tube headers. A more street-oriented motor that makes peak power at 4500 rpm and is designed more for torque will appreciate short-tube headers.
