Yak, yak, yak
My wife and I had been talking about buying some land recently. Yesterday I found a 5 acre parcel located just outside of town and decided to go look at it. I was happy to see easy access to the property from a paved road. While walking the property boundary I saw a neighboring property had a cinder block garage with a several junkers parked around it. While I was concerned a little, thick woods separate the properties, and who knows, maybe a new gearhead friend? I walked over to see if anyone was around and imagine my surprise. Parked outside was not one but TWO Shelbys, 68's. Yep, if I buy the property we're gonna be GOOD friends! An elderly gentleman walked out of the building and I introduced myself and told him why I was there. I also told him I loved Mustangs and had several. He pointed to the two Shelbys and said he'd had his since April of 1980. There was a red and a blue car, both GT500's. He told me he'd bought them to restore, but never got around to it. I asked if he'd ever sell them? Much to my surprise he said his son had been playing around with the red one, but he'd sell the blue one of the price was right. Okay, guess that rules me out. Probably some astronomical price! When I asked what he was looking to get, he said his son told him Mustangs were popular, but due to it being rusty he'd deal some. Umm, wait a minute, Mustangs? He never once called them Shelbys! Could I be dealing with the only fools that had never heard of a Shelby?!! I told him cash was tight, the wife REALLY didn't want me buying another car, but I was interested. I asked what he'd consider reasonable? When he told me he'd take 15, I was sunk. No way I could afford 15k. I looked the car over and found it was actually a GT500KR. It even had all of the smog stuff on the motor. I told him I'd love to buy the car, but 15k was way more than I could afford. He looked at me then and said, "when I said 15, I meant 1500, I know I'd NEVER get 15k for THAT car!" I told him to wait right there and I'd run back to the truck to ask the wife. When I explained to the wife what the car was, what it was worth and how much the old guy wanted, she told me okay. I love my wife!!! The down side was, I had to agree to start making arrangements to sell my '66 fastback the day I get the Shelby home. I gave the guy a check and a cash deposit. Since I'm back out of town all of this coming week, I can't get a trailer until next weekend. I told him I'd be back to get it then. I'll post some more detailed shots of the car when I get it to the house, but here's how it currently looks:
I just can't believe after all of these years of looking I could ever find a Shelby I could afford! :thu
