Road noises

I drove the fastback to work today. Perhaps I was motivated by Mel driving his, although I kept my drive to about 5-10 over the speed limit. ;)

I have some noises I want to try to get rid of if I can, understanding that this is still an old car and won't drive like my wife's Lexus.

Particularly noticable at a stop sign/light, I have a rotating noise coming from the clutch or transmission. It is independent of the clutch, ie, same noise if I push the clutch pedal in or not.

While driving and foot on the gas, ie, accelerating, I have a whine from the rear. Let off the gas and coast, no whine. I suspect that is the pinion gear to ring gear mesh and may need to pull the pinion and add a shim.

Had a little bit of popping still today in the exhaust with base timing set at 14*, 35* total. Not much, and intermittent, ie, I couldn't make it happen, or repeat it deliberately, it just happened a few times. I'll have to note when and try to keep track of it.

I HAVE to get one of those mustangs to fear headliners. My hair just barely touches the headliner and its annoying.

Sam,
Whining from the rear, I hope you are referring about your car's rear :censored If so, then yes it might be shim time. How old are the gears?
Headliner issue: Shave your head.

otherwise :sm_NTA

My rear is doing the same thing and has since I purchased it. It has about 2000 miles on it now. I planned on pulling the rear and checking it out but don't have the time or knowledge at this time. Besides the motor is out getting a new cam and tie-bar lifters so it won't be going anywhere. It will be a project for this coming winter.

The 9" diff I got from Rick was also a recent rebuild. Rick said it made noise in his car and I ran it for a while in my car and it was noisy. I had the pre-load checked/reset and that helped but still very loud. I'm going to get a new ring and pinion for it. I'm told by a few that once they start making noise it won't go away.
