Restoration Crossroads

janschutz

Corn Hauler
I am at crossroad on the restoration of the Mustang I was doing for my wife. She needs a better driver. She drive about 80 miles a day as a Dyslexia Tutor. Since I have taken over management of the family farm, I have less time to work on her Mustang. Frankly, last year I had trouble even keeping up on the maintenance on my Mustang and found myself paying others do do work that I normally would do.

Her mustang still needs me to finish the motor, brakes, interior. and electrical. Alot

The way I see it, My options are

1. Pay someone to finish it.

2. Sell it (or part it out)and buy one finished. (she would like a 6 cyl. and AC) What would this project car bring in today's market?

3. Park the project Mustang in a barn at the farm and get her a reliable late model driver.

Personally, if it was my wife I'd opt for the reliable late model driver. 80 miles / day is a lot of travel, even on a restored/upgraded 60's car. The late model will be more confortable, less ongoing cost (gas, etc) and more reliable albeit less style. Could likely get one for fairly cheap also.

+1 I agree with Apollard. For now, get her a newer daily driver. If she still wants the Mustang for later on, maybe you can store it in the barn.

+2 to the late model DD but I will add that you should not sell the project. You'll get very little for it in it's present condition. If it is in good condition (rust, etc.) and you have the space to store it until you can get back at it...store it.

John, +3 on the late model driver and keeping the 68 as a project. it is too close to done and too nice to sell or part out. if you can swing the storage, store it for a while. I think your wife needs a nice late model F150 p/u with a trailer hitch. If she can get it before next weekend, let me know because I need some stuff hauled....

+ whatever number it is....get her a nice 6 cyl late model Mustang to drive....then work on the classic.

I found someone that is going to finish the car. I have seen his work and it is great. His rate is so cheap, I felt like I was stealing it. I told him I would pay him (bonus) when it is done and the cost are still that low..

I would do the late model for her and build the project as your DD backup...

Ditto.

Get her a DD and KEEP the Mustang for back up and occasional driving to work. Car is too nice for daily driving. Hang some classic car insurance on it and enjoy.

Bye bye Allen, TX.
