Price range?

I've been doing some research this evening but not sure on an answer.

Buddy is thinking about buying an '88 Fox Convertible. Paint is really nice, car is slightly lowered (not ghetto lowered just performance lowered), rims look good, interior is nice, etc.

Car has a 5.0 in it but it is for certain not stock...current owner selling it claims it will run mid 11's in the quarter.

Stick shift car.

Sounds like a heck of a lot of fun to drive and I did mention I'd need to drive it before I could say for sure on my thoughts on value :thu

I'm guessing maybe $10k at most?

Been looking all over the net to find ads and not a lot of '88 convertibles in good shape to be found.

Found some really insane ad's wanting $20k plus but most seem to be running about $7,500 to maybe a little over $10k.

Of course I can find a bunch of them that are projects for $3k or so.

Thoughts?

I think it just depends what the market for Fox bodies is where you are, and the mods it has. A friend recently picked up a 7-up convertible that is stock except for a Turbo Coupe disc brake rear end (3.55) and flowmasters, and is a 7 out of 10. It was on craigslist for 4 weeks @ $4500. He bought it for $3400. If it runs in the 11's, (juiced?) and the drive train is reasonably fresh, I'd say $7500 is tops. If it's blown and tuned it might be close to 10K. Just my opinion of what I would consider paying around here.

+1 on which market. Around here notchbacks and hatchbacks can get a little pricey, usually in the 5-7k range. Verts though run around 4k and seem to be plentiful.

There is a 92 vert for sale by me for $4500. I've been trying to convince my wife I need it. She's not too keen on it yet.
I would say 5 to 7000 max. But every area is different.

I'd wager that unless it has a nice sized power-adder it is no where near a 11.5 sec car either. Unless he shows you the receipts for that $10k engine he had built.

Don't you need a cage to get on the track once you break the 12 sec mark?

Anyhoo... like others have said, the region drives the market, there's a sweet looking 84 SVO in my neck of the woods advertised for $4K that I'd love to have. certainly more collectible than an average 88, but not a convertible...

Send me a link if you got one.

The car for $10K is high unless: Condition is great and mods are professional or it is a very low mileage original car. Without seeing and knowing what's done I'd lean more toward the $7-7500 range on a good car. They are plentiful around here but are also one of the most redneck-rocketed cars out.

88 SVO is worth grabbing. I done a turbo 4 conversion for my son's 93 hatch and it's the MOST fun car I've ever drove. On the vert, not sure but I would cap it at 5k tops. That is if it's in at 85% or better. One thing that scares me is the comment about how fast it will go. Not that it won't do it, but how much has that engine been ragged out doing, or trying to do that. There's a red one here in town for sale that if there's an interest I'll stop by and look it over good and get a price. It looks pretty good from a distance. Also I've heard it coming down the road, its a V8 for sure.

If it were me looking...I can find locally some pretty sweet looking hatch back Fox models for $5k or less. I really like those old cars but the verts of that vintage don't do a whole lot for me.

Duane, I had shared your concern regarding if the car really runs that fast that means someone had to go dog it out to prove it.

Did some more checking this morning on the Craigs List for all the major Texas markets. Looks like lower miles cars in decent shape are getting $5k - $7,500 for convertibles around that year.

What I think my buddy should do is go drive it and see what he thinks. Hell, it's his money and I guess price is relative to what someone is willing to pay.

If it were me, I'd take it out knowing I wasn't interested just to see how close I could get it to an 11 or 12 second quarter, LOL! :steer

I have to wonder in the coming years though if the Fox cars won't appreciate faster than the classics. Those cars were the stuff when I was in high school in the late 80's / early 90's.

I'm stuck in meetings in Minnesota today. I'll see if I can post it when I get home.

Pretty nice car pat, you should jump on it since it matches alainas perfectly.

why is it that the fox drivers seat always develops that pimp lean towards the center console?

Trying to talk Jen into it. She wants me to get a new car, but a four door. Which is depressing for me.

And the pimp lean is too many fat people thinking that they are vanilla ice, rolling in their 5.0.
