My T5 swap progress - updated with pics

I spent the last weekend removing my toploader, clutch, flywheel and bellhousing, between raindrops. Pictures, with comments:

Here's the toploader that came out.

Inside of bellhousing. Wait, what's that in the corner...

Close-up of piece of spring. I think I know what that is...

Yep, something's missing. The clutch material is nearly gone on both sides. :wth

And the other half of the spring ended up here.

The grease trick didn't work for me to remove the pilot bushing, so I started cutting and chiseling. It finally came out. :yah

Installation of the new T5 is next weekend. With lots of luck and NorCal Stangfixer help, I'll be driving it to Knott's the following weekend.

Re: My T5 swap progress

When renewing the flywheel , do some sealer on the thread of the bolts.IIRC to avoid oil leakage. :confu
Before putting the T5 to the engine , I would do some measurements to be sure there is no load on the chrankshaft by the inputshaft of the trans.
To avoid wearing of the trust bearing. ( believe there is a toic on this forum about this. )
Just some idea's I was thinking about.
I also did this conversion ( C4 to T5z ) but can't remember it in detail. :confu

Re: My T5 swap progress

Looks like you got in there right on time. How long has that spring been bouncing around in there? Pilot bearings suck. I destroyed a chisel or two trying to get my old one out.

Re: My T5 swap progress

Well, the last few days involved a few setbacks. I left work early yesterday and today to get some work done before the tranny install. I started installing the new pilot bushing. I checked the bore of the bushing first and the mandrel from the clutch alignment tool went through smooth. I tapped the bushing in and when it was about 3/4 of the way in I checked with the mandrel again and it bound up about halfway in. Thinking I screwed up, I removed the bushing (this time the grease trick worked). After wiping it off I checked with the mandrel again and it went through just fine. I decided it may be a good idea to get a new bushing just to be safe. Got home with the new bushing and compared it with the other new bushing and it was thicker by about 3/32". Measured the bore in the back of the crankshaft and found that the thicker bushing was too thick! :wtf At this point I decided the other new bushing was just fine and installed it with the borrowed bushing installer kit from Autozone. The alignment mandrel binds just a bit but goes in with a bit of tapping with a hammer. I'm hoping this won't be an issue. I'll mic the tranny pilot shaft and the alignment mandrel to see just how close they are. Just a few thousandths will make a difference.

I installed the flywheel with no problems but when I went to install the clutch and pressure plate I discovered that the 5/16 X 18 pressure plate bolts wouldn't work with the King Cobra clutch kit. I determined that the holes in the flywheel are metric (8 X 1.25 mm). Now I have to track down a metric pressure plate bolt kit, and apparently the flywheel dowels are included with the bolts. The flywheel has multiple boltholes and the ones for the early pressure plate are tapped 5/16 X 18.

I also have another issue that I wouldn't even have known about except for a very timely post on VMF by someone else with the same issue. It seems that I have the wrong clutch fork pivot that came with the spacer block. There are two different spacer block kits and I ordered the one for '67 and up but apparently early 67's used the earlier style pivot. So now I have to locate the early style pivot.

If I can get these two issues resolved I should be able to be ready for Saturday morning when the cavalry arrives.

Re: My T5 swap progress

Check Frontier Ford, I was looking at the ford racing site and they sell the bolt kit. I ended buying these for mine http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/M6397A302/86-00-Mustang-Pressure-Plate-Bolt-And-Dowell-Kit

Maybe if you know where you can buy ARP bolts look at this kit. http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/ite ... e-Bolt-Kit

Good luck

Re: My T5 swap progress

I forgot to mention that the flywheel I removed appeared to be the original one. Had the Ford part # and date code.

I don't remember any loud noises or anything to alert me of a problem, so I have no idea how long it was like that.

I owe my stepdad a couple of chisels for the ones I destroyed!

Frank,
If you need me to do a couple local errands during the next couple days, call me. Would Superior Clutch have what you need? They're in Santa Clara.

Re: My T5 swap progress

Frank, I am a bit on the tired side after my whirl wind trip to SoCal yesterday, but I can measure the drive shaft on the 67 if you need me to.

I have the king cobra clutch and since this was done so long ago I can't remember all the other issues. I bought my entire setup at one shop that also helped me with the conversion. So, all the parts were exactly the correct parts the first time.

IIRC we did some custom machine work on one of the cars pilot bearings.

Thanks, Craig. For now, I have my current two issues worked out. Mustang Ranch has the pivot for $9.95.

I had to buy a new flywheel because I couldn't find anyone to rebalance the '87 flywheel and that flywheel has the dowel pins that I can pop out and use, so I'll just go to OSH for the bolts.

Thanks for the offer, Mel. I'll just wait til I have the tranny installed on Saturday and measure to figure out what length I need.

Re: My T5 swap progress

Saturday, with lots of help from JeffTepper, Cmayna and KBMWRS, I got the T5 installed. All in all, it went in pretty smoothly. I had to cut the top and right sides of the shifter hole just a bit, I ended up cutting it a little more than really necessary. We measured for the driveshaft and came up with 50 inches, so I need 1" cut out.

Craig took a few pictures, hopefully he'll be along to post them. I took a few pictures, but left my camera at my parents' house so I'll post them later.

I'll install the shortened driveshaft Monday evening and take it for the first drive. :pbj

Re: My T5 swap progress

Frank , whats your rear end ratio.

I too did install a T5z trans but with a rear end ratio of 2.80 it wasn't so driveble.

this weekend I install a 3.55 and I love it !!!

So keep up the good work and to keep CMAYNA happy , one word : dog cookies

Damn rights Bruno !!

Yes, another successful T5 install yesterday with the infamous local NorCal Fixers. Seems like lately, we just don't have a personal life. Always working on someone's Mustangs. But it's all good.

Yes Bruno, Frank is also running 3:55 in the back.

Luckly Frank had already removed the Toploader so all we had to do is new install stuff.

First of all, I balked at Frank for an obvious non adjusted headlamp and told him it needed his attention immediately. :wtf

Frank, Jeff & Mikey under da bomb. We can't afford a tranny jack because we spend so much on booze, so we let Jeff hold the tranny in place while Frank tightens it down. Who knows what the hell Mikey's role is:

Yes, we can't do much without the spiritual help of our fallen hero:

Mikey and Frank approached me saying that the door glass was stained with something that fell from the sky and could I clean it up. So taking one for the team:

You are doing a great job guys. :thu :thu :thu :thu :thu

ps next time , use Mike as a jack !!! Pump his leg up and down and you will notice his belly will inflate. :hide :hide

Got the driveshaft shortened today and new U-joints installed. They cut off and replaced both ends of the shaft to get a combination that resulted in the lowest cost :thu. Apparently, if they hadn't replaced the rear yoke the joint would have cost more. :shrug

I installed the driveshaft after work and replaced my wiper blades and a leaking fuel hose at the gas tank, then took it for a test drive...

IT LIVES! :pbj :yah

I've read repeatedly that if you use the late model style clutch that you should remove the clutch assist spring on the pedal. I looked up under my dash and...I don't see any spring! I see the top of the pedal arm and the semi-circular notch in the arm and the nylon insert in the notch, but no spring. All these years with no spring, I'm curious how different it would have felt with the spring. I really didn't feel that the clutch action was bad, it might have been a bit hard to push but not objectionable. With the new clutch and no spring, the pedal really springs back when I let up on it. Something I need to get used to, I guess. I also need to get used to not pushing the shifter to the right to go into 3rd gear. I need to let it self-center.

I wasn't expecting my starter to sound different!

I kind of wish it had a dipstick so I could monitor the fluid level and add fluid easily.

Now to get some miles on it before Friday.
