motor install w/ headers?

I don't see it happening, I can't install my 289 with the headers on.

I'm guessing a little of both would be easiest. I've never had a 351w in a 65 (but will one day if I ever get back to it!) but I used to slip the engine and headers in at the same time (although separately) when dropping in engines in my other cars. Typically I would slip the headers in just before I got the engine lowered all the way into place. Whole lot easier that trying to fish them in after the engine is set in place, IMHO.

My 351w with Hooker Comps barely fit between the frame rails on my 70, so unless you enjoy pain and suffering and dented headers I'd suggest installing the engine without the headers. I had to dent the headers to clear the steering box and idler arm. If you have all steering, booster/MC, and export brace removed it might be possible but it'll likely need to be an install with surgical precision ;) Also, if these haven't been installed previously, be prepared to have to remove them to apply a few clearancing blows with a BFH. If already clearanced, you may get away with doing Horesplay's suggestion.

My tri-y's will slip right in from underneath without the slightest problem. Just have to have the car up on stands.

I have a motor on my Table saw and my air compressor and neither will take headers. I have an engine in both Mustangs and they will allow the use of headers, same with my ATVs and lawn Mower.

I would be curious as to how big this motor is and how many batteries it needs to run? May be cool to have an electric Mustang.

Never mind me I just had to get :sarc....

I have seen an engine installed with the headers attached, but have never tried it. It seems too easy to just install them. Both cars have Try-Y headers on the SBF....

A 351W in a 65/66 is a very tight fit. When I had a 351W in my 66, I was running a set of long tube Hookers (now that just doesn't sound right!!) and getting the headers in place was extremely challenging. I found the easiest way to do it, is to have the car jacked up high on jack stands and have the engine lifted, so that the tranny bellhousing touched the firewall. If I didn't lift the engine, the neighbors would probably complaint about all the swear words coming from the shop!! I don't think that I could have gotten a piece of paper in between the headers and shock towers, it was so tight.

For me (and I have a larger engine bay in the 70), the passenger side header install is easy. The drivers side requires removal of the steering box and then it can be removed from below. In order to remove the drivers header from above, I have to remove the M/C and booster. Rob, lifting one side of the motor is a good suggestion and one I'll keep in mind if I ever have to remove my DS header.

I removed the bolts from both motor mounts and lifted the whole motor straight up. The 351W was a FUN motor when it was installed, but I don't miss dealing with those damn headers!!!

And he's had to remove and reinstall it a few times....

I'd think a 351 in a '65 would be a pretty tight fit even without the headers.
