Mach One or Fastback?

How can one tell the difference on a 1969, is it a Mach One or simply a fastback. I know on the newer 71-73 there is an 05 in the VIN, does that apply to a 69 also?

70 also has 05 in the VIN, on the 69 the door plate data is the only thing that signified it was a Mach 1, 63C for the body code.

The 05 in the vin started in 1970, IIRC the only way to tell if its a Mach1 in 69 is decoding the data plate for int trim.
Someone with a 69 should be able to fill in this blank.

This is correct. Without the original door tag or a marti report there is no difinitive way. There are things that can lead you to assume its a mach but they all could have been added.

Isn't it technically a sportsroof and not a fastback if its a 69/70?

Not to be a pain in the a$$$ , but yes ...its a sportsroof !!!! :roll :roll :roll

Using the VIN, you can rule out anything that isn't a H, M, S, R or Q code. Must be a 351W or larger engine to be a Mach. And as everyone else already noted, the body code of 63C is the definitive bit of data.
