So I pulled the brake pedal assembly the other day, and noticed this:

Looks like some backyard engineering to me.

Yep....I think I would be doing a bit of work on that one. Maybe compare to the correct unit so you know where things are wrong at....

The P.O. is what's wrong with this car. Every time I work on it, I find another "fix". Kinda scary when you consider the guy drove this death trap as a DD. The guy did a 6-8/man-auto conversion, and from the looks of it, he screwed up EVERYTHING.

Been there.....done that..... Some things can really scare you. Loose bolts, parts not replaced and said they were, wire nuts on electrical, missing parts under others, poor prep for painting, Great Stuff in the cowl, and on and on and on......

At least you can spot the bad areas when you find them. I would be looking at all the safety items to make sure they are up to standards, then go after the rest.

Speaking of scary, the guy I bought if from said it had "mechanical" brakes. :wtf I guess mechanical means, only the front brakes kinda work because the rear brake hose was busted.

Mechanical brakes.......drag your feet thru the rusted holes in the floor.....

Way back in the olden days cars had mechanical brakes....a rod actuated them instead of fluid....real safe.

Yea, when he said it, I gave him a look that I can't quite describe. I just figured the guy either misspoke or was an idiot.
I bought the thing knowing it had some issues, but the more I look, the more I find.
I've often wondered who's the bigger idiot, him or me for buying the thing.

I think we all feel that way with many of the classics we buy. Even buying from friends, you can be left hanging with issues that were never mentioned. Sometimes you just bite your tongue and make the changes that are needed, hoping the next owner has good thoughts about you being a "PO".....

Hope these pics help. I removed the manual trans non-power steel brake pedal pad off and installed it onto my power auto trans pedal arm. Pull the rubber pad off yours and compare the weld puddle on the front of the metal pad. You should be able to follow the following steps with a bit more cleanup needed on the pedal arm due to the PO hackjob

Originally cut the power auto pedal pad but wasn't happy, so this is a comparison of the two pedals I started with:

Ground the weld down and popped the pad off with a hammer:

Ground the weld smooth on pedal arm in preparation for new weld:

Not the best welding job (splattered a bit on me), but puddle weld the hole to the arm like it is from the factory:

I remember wondering why I bought my 66 in the middle of the resto, but it's just a forgotten memory now. I have much bigger worries with my super engine building skilzs.

Wait, you have a Mustang AND you work on it? When did all this happen?

Man, you and Mark both brought jokes today.

Seriously though, I really don't spend as much time on it as I should. Most of what I need to do will require money, something of which I'm lacking.

Ha, just wait until the baby comes! You'll have no time and no money!

Yup. In about 4 months, it'll be goodbye time, money, sleep and hello poopy diapers. Get to go find out what we're having next month. I'm pretty sure it's a baby though.

In 4 months time, you'll finally find the answer to "who flung the dung".
