Installing New Package Tray

I have an idea I want to discuss. I am replacing my package tray on my car. The old one had 6x9 speakers in it and the speakers were dropped down thru the package tray. I want to install the new speakers directly to the metal in the rear deck and drill speaker holes into the package tray then put sheer cloth on the back of the tray over the speakers. I want to drill small holes like a factory install but hide speakers. I also want to do the same with 5" speakers in the doors with small holes in the door panels. In other words have the speakers without tearing up the car. Any of you done this and if so posted photos of the job you did? Thanks

Used to do that all the time....before the days of the internet.....lol Works great....lay out a grid pattern and drill small holes first, then enlarge. Do not push to hard or you will crack the board. Measure the layout several times to be sure it is the correct fit. I also would use some foam padding around the edge to prevent vibration rattle.

Doing a trial first and then using it as a guide works good too. I have even seen aluminum used as a pattern/guide.

Mount your rear deck speakers onto a board then mount the board to the bottom of the rear deck. Cut out holes for the speakers in the package tray then cover the package tray with cloth, leather, or whatever. That's how I did my system.

When drilling holes through the package tray , lay a piece of wood beneath it .
That way you have nice holes.
Maybe its better to drill from the backside of the package tray , i would do it this way.

I will be doing something similar - you can buy the package tray board (think it's called fiberboard) from Lowe's/HD but you'll need a 4'X8' (I think that's the large one) to have a long enough piece to do the tray, the smaller piece the sell is too short. I used my old tray as a template to cut the new one and plan to use the rest to make trunk panels, templates for a console, etc.

I am going to mount my speakers from the bottom up to the metal tray, probably use something to stop vibration between the two like closed cell foam or damplifier, etc. With the speakers mounted I'll cover the new package tray with nylon wide spaced screen, like home window screens but larger squares. Then cover that with a thin cloth to match my interior (red). I was told by a stereo guy to cover the entire tray with the screen (glue/staple down taught) as I had planned to just cover the 6X9 cutout hole with the screening but he said it'll droop if it doesn't cover it in one piece. The idea is for the screen to support the cloth over the holes as eventually the cloth will droop into the 6X9 cutouts without the support.

I think you are going to restrict a lot of the sound and airpressure coming out of the 6X9's by doing just drilled holes and it'll be a challenge to keep the holes evenly spaced so it'll look good, you'll be able to see them remember.

Post back what you come up with and the results, different ideas are what this hobby/sickness is all about.
