Does anyone know how to do an exorcism on a car? After the last two trips to work, I'm convinced that my fastback is possessed!
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to do the intermittent wiper conversion on both my mustang and the wife's. Her car was easy. Do the conversion from single speed to two speed intermittent is easy. Mine turned out to be a nightmare. With the alarm wiring and efi wiring under the dash, I had to take out the clutch/brake pedals and support. Then, the two speed motors have different bolt patterns then the single speed and correct motor for the conversion. My two speed motor wouldn't work with the intermittent stuff, of course. but I digress...
Since I had a lot of the crap out from under the dash, I figured it would be a good time to tidy up the wires. Most of the wires were already running together, and just zipped tied together. I removed most of the zip ties and used cold wrap tap to bundle up the new wires. I shortened all of the alarm wires to get rid of the excess wire just hanging. I had to yank the computer and move a couple of the relays alittle closer together...no rewiring was needed there, just shifted them over a little on the bracket. Under the dash looks a lot better, less like a rats nest. I get the car put back together (mostly...still need to finish the reverse lights wiring), and I drive it to work. I have a wideband O2 sensor in the car and I noticed that the air to fuel ratio is bouncing around a bit more than what it was. And a couple of times I noticed that when I when to shift, the rpm's didn't drop or it revved some. I called the manufacturer of the O2 sensor, and he said I needed to recalibrate the heater and clean air on the sensor. No problem. Did that and took it to work again the next day. The trip started off great. The air/fuel ratio is alot more steady. But the demon decided to rear it's ugly head again. This time not only are the rpm's staying up during a few shifts, now the engine is deciding to cut out when accelerating from a stop. Not every time just occasionally. It's not a lean miss, but at that point it's running pig rich. The air/fuel ratio is somewhere around 8:1, instead of the typical 14.6:1. And I can smell the raw fuel.
I did nothing to the computer or the program. Thinking the tune may have gotten corrupted by having the battery unplugged for a couple of weeks, I reuploaded it -- no help and even tried a previous tune, and still runs the same. I datalogged the trip yesterday, and took a look at the variables that I'm tracking to see if I can narrow it down. Last night I did notice in the log that I think I can see where the cut out is happening...some, not all of the variables are zeroing out. At this point, I'm assuming that it's an electrical issue with the computer. So, I guess I'm crawling back under the dash to find the problem....aaaarrrrggggghhhh!! A carb is looking really good right about now.
And to add insult to injury, the bleeping intermittent wipers are working properly...again possessed. The slow and fast work great, but the intermittent speed doesn't. Again it sporadic...it sometimes acts like it on fast, sometimes it stops 1/2 way up. Enough to make me want to drink excessively!! I've already replaced the intermittent box thinking that was the problem, but nope.
I do really think that my car is possessed.
