Can't find a part you need? Make it!

I've seen this before but it is awesome to rewatch it. I couldn't believe when he said the scanner was 3K. I also looked it up and Dimension's base line ABS printer is around 20k. I just HAVE to believe that there's a market there to buy one or a few of those setups and do custom prototyping for the little guy. Prototyping an individual part is so expensive, but if the customer can make it out of clay (or I bet even using a CAD setup) they can have a prototype sent out quickly, and once you recoup your investment costs in the machine, it could pay pretty quickly. Add automated CNC to the process and the home hobbyist really has no limitations. You could make some Alternator brackets out of wood, ship them in, and a week or two later have CNC machined brackets that NOBODY else has.

Meh, I just want one of those to play with :)

Got to see one in action a couple of years ago while I was in Daytona Beach, it's pretty cool to watch, but it is a looooooooong process!

I used to be part owner of a business called "Thundertech Racing" and we made "aftermarket" parts for R/C racing hobby. My job was to reverse engineer parts and then design stronger or better replacement parts. Before we would spend money on a mold (injection molds are $$$) we would "rapid prototype" the parts. They could make a resin part from a 3D drawing and we could test fit assemblies before ever making a real part. Below, the white colored parts are the resin prototype parts fitted on a 1/10th scale Monster truck axle assembly. Our local technical school has a machine that can make small prototype parts.
