Can you identify this timing cover?

It has a C4 date code, but was it used on 65 cars or just the 260?
What water pump was used with it?

Not sure if this will help, but here is a picture of my 1963 260 pump and cover:

Thanks guys.

The reason I ask is because I want to make my 302 into a 289 on the front of the motor. I want to change the balancer to a 3 bolt, change the timing cover and water pump, and find the proper front single grove pulley without having alignment issues.

I really dont want to spend the money right now on new parts if I can find decent used bits. This cover is the only one I have, I just hope it does not require some super expensive water pump thats hard to find.

If anyone has a front pulley and harmonic balancer for sale let me know!

You can still buy an aluminum WP from any local parts store or the cast 66 and later one is available and will work also. I should have a pulley and balancer here for you and will check tomorrow.

Thanks.

So this cover should use an aluminum water pump then? (I used to know this stuff, 25 years ago)

The cover will have a year stamped and dots around it to designate the month. The C5 cover came along mid year 1965 and used a cast WP. The aluminum pump has an open impeller and the cover is recessed and is open to coolant. The later cover for the cast iron pump doesn't see coolant except at the ports and the water pump has a sealed rear impeller cover. You can't use a OE style Aluminum WP on the later C5 up cover because it is too shallow. Just pick up an Aluminum pump as they are lighter anyway and work fine.

I checked in the small block "bible" (Bob Mannel's book), and the cover is a post May '64 260/289. Initially I didn't see the plug on it in your picture, but did after looking a second time. This was installed during production to block the original oil filler tube that earlier units had there.

I took a few more pics today. I am still curious about water pump choices, I would be fine with a cast iron unit. I like this one because the timing pointer is on the correct side.

It turns out it was made in December of 63, not that I am going for an exact date coded part, I just thought it may be relevant somehow?

Can I use it with a 289 cast iron pump and still maintain belt alignment or should I just stick with the aluminum unit? I have read about the aluminum ones with exposed impellers having overheating issues along with coolant damaging the aluminum etc.. ?

It does have the plug where the oil fill would go. (I have a 65 block BTW)
