Adding another Pony to the Fleet

Well, I've been in the market for another 65-66 Mustang Coupe to build for my wife.

I've had $4500 burning a hole in my pocket looking for the right one, and have passed on a few I've looked at.

We left this past Sunday for Orlando, and someone, the same day, posts a 65 coupe on My home's Craigslist. Of COURSE.

I called him up. It's a D-Code (289-4v) coupe. From my research, this was a pretty limited run and a moderately rare car. Body is solid, floors, frame, and torque boxes are solid. Interior is brand new. Apparently, the owner before it's current one had a 6cyl Fastback and swapped it's 6cyl with the v8 from this one. So right now it has a complete 4lug and rebuilt 6 cyl setup with it. The current owner found a correct date coded 65 289-4v and rebuilt it. Comes with that, another 8 inch from a 65, and 5 lug setup. So 2 rebuilt engines, new interior, and a solid body.

$3500 delivered to my house. I'm pretty excited. He's sent me about 100 photos and I gave him a $100 paypal to hold it til I can see it in person this Friday night.

I have plenty of photos but god damn is Disney World's internet slow.

I'll upload them this weekend when I get it home.

Had to share!

Nevermind, I got them uploaded.

Here's a couple photos

Yeah, I know all the places to check. :)

I'll be taking a gallon of water for the cowl, a magnet for the body.

It's really tough to find nice ones in MI without rust.

My wife's name is Kat, too. :)

I see it has the three vent louvers by the battery. I'm not an expert but I thought this was only found in generator cars and more specifically 64.5. Can't say that for fact but maybe someone here could confirm or explain. If you had the VIN that would surely clear it up as well. I know my early (March) 65 doesn't have them.

D code was a low compression 210hp 4bbl 289 that was a 64.5 only item, IIRC, so it should be a 64.5. Sounds like a very nice deal for the $$.

VIN on the title didn't match EITHER of the VINs on the car. No thanks. I passed.

Bought another one instead. I'll snap some photos when I pick it up Sunday

Nice. Could you tell which VIN on that car you thought was the original? Just curious as to how early a car it might have been is all. I would have to assume the radiator support to be original so if it had say a 64 and a 65 VIN, fair guess the 64 to be the original.

both vins on the car decode as a 64 1/2. So does the vin on the title... unfortunately, all three are different... weird, right?
