'67 coupe, good news!

We bought a red '67 coupe a few months ago.
It came from the dry desert of So. Utah where it had apparently sat for many years.
It has some nice options and was CHEAP!
Red on red, deluxe interior with upper and lower consoles, deluxe exterior trim including the cool finned rear tail light panel, power assist front disk brakes. Other than neglect it hasn't been messed with.

When we went to pick it up and trailer it home, it was really dirty. We assumed the dirt piled in it was from the blowing red dust in the area. I thought it odd that the seller didn't even get his junk out of it or bother to hose it off.
Since coming home, Mike has taken it apart. The red dust had turned to concrete in many areas. The doors were full of red concrete he had to chizel out.
We've decided the car must have been flooded. Mike calls it the "Submarine." He's vacuumed and blown and swept and there is always more red dirt.
However, he cleaned up the engine, replaced wires, hoses, carb, etc and now the car RUNS. In fact it outright purrrrrsss like a baby kitten.
He's done some replacement and cleanup on the power steering, suspension and brakes and has driven it down the street.
It has some rust at the bottom of the rear quarters and minor holes over the wheel wells that will require some patching.
The front had been hit at some point and slightly smooshed in. He's put another hood, grill, bumper and valance on it. All from his "Stash" so it didn't cost us anything.
Since we knew it was submerged we assumed the floors were going to be in bad shape. On the lift the underside didn't look bad but it has a lot of sealant sprayed on it.
Now the interior is out. Last night Mike took the seats and carpet out. He was delighted. NO RUST in the floors! Just minimal surface rust behind the driver's seat.

The funny/sad thing is our son is working on a red on red '67 coupe for his wife. It is a terrible rust bucket. But her Dad was the original owner so it is sentimental. The car sits bottomless on a rotisserie. He has been waiting for over two months for backordered full floor. I almost feel guilty.

We were thinking of "flipping" our red '67, but now I'm growing attached. It'll probably remain an EPPERSTANG. I think it would be really cool for me and my daughter in law to show up to car shows and events with look alike red '67 coupes.

Here's some photos of when we picked it up and the dirt that was on/in it. And a pic of the floor pans we are delighted about.

Congrats on the nice find of a diamond in the rough. It will look sharp with the interior is refreshed. I love the brushed aluminum they had is 67. That is why I put it in my 68.

Wow...it looks great considering your suspicions. And it runs? Wow. :thu

You know you want to keep it Joyce. :steer

I forgot where did you get it from? Looks kinda like some of the places just North of me.

I see some of those things down here. Probably not flooded, just sat in the field and got snow, rain, and with the wind lots of dirt. It probably sat for many years in the same place.

Gotta dig those vintage Cragars! Can you say rechrome?

Congrats, you do have quite a stable....

Mel

PS. I have some brand new side rocker molding still in the cardboard tube that are kind of in the way....I could be talked into a trade for something from your other half's stash I have a fair stash of 67 parts here to if you need something. It is the time of year I get to SLC alot.....MH

Hi Mel,
The car came from not far from you. Between Beryl and Modena. That is barren country!
I imagine we could swap something for those rocker moldings.
I'll PM our phone no. so you can let us know when you'll be in SLC.
J.
