2018 StangFix Midwest Cruise-In

Horseplay I Don't Care. Do you?

We talked about and threatened to do this before but looks like this is turning into a reality. We will have to nail down the location details but figure something in the northern IL, Southern WI area would work for many. Maybe make it a cruise and overnight at some locale a part of it. I'd be willing to play host to a cookout etc. at my place too.

For now, let's get a roll call going of who might be interested or willing to commit to participate first. The thought was to do it towards the end of summer or even early fall. I'm fairly open to the date depending on everyone's availability. Post up your suggestions on location, activities and dates as well.

Sure. Be easier for you to haul over the rear end I plan on having built for the truck by the guy in Ames. ;)

If everyone wants to add some ideas or routes from their areas then we determine a direction to go.

If we go north I would add

    1. The house on the rock.

    2. Cave of mounds

    3. Devils lake state park

    4. Wisconsin dells

    Wisconsin River/Baraboo Hills Tour

The Wisconsin River/Baraboo Hills Fall Tour begins in Lodi and heads west on Hwy 113 for five miles to Cty V and Gibraltar Rock County Park (watch for the signs). The climb to the top is steep and not for the faint-of-heart, but the autumn views are truly spectacular. Two miles further on Hwy 113 and you'll cross the Wisconsin River aboard the ColSac III Merrimac carferry – it's free. Hwy 113 then turns north and bisects Devil's Lake State Park – one of Wisconsin most popular parks with terrific views of the fall color from the bluffs above the deep blue lake. Hwy 113 continues into Baraboo where the kids will love a stop at Circus World Museum.

For more fall foliage driving, follow Hwy 12 north seven miles to Fern Dell Road west to Mirror Lake State Park. From there the many amusements of Wisconsin Dells – including autumn boat tours through the carved sandstone bluffs of the Wisconsin River – are just minutes away.

    Dodgeville to Spring Green

The scenic fall drive along Hwy 23 from Dodgeville to Spring Green is one of the most picturesque in southwestern Wisconsin. This 18-mile stretch traverses the hardwood ridges and valleys of Wisconsin's driftless area. During your fall foliage road trip, you can visit a pair of Wisconsin state parks as well as two of the state's top tourism attractions. For additional fall color adventure, take any of the intersecting roads that meander the coulees and echo their history – Norwegian Hollow Road, Hunter Hollow Road, or Percussion Rock Road.

Just outside Dodgeville, Governor Dodge State Park offers 5,000 acres of fun with 270 campsites, 28 miles of hiking trails and a scenic waterfall. Closer to Spring Green, The House on the Rock's daring infinity Room features a 218-foot-long glass walkway that hangs over the autumn splendor of the Wyoming Valley, 156 feet below. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin home, Taliesin, is nearby as is Tower Hill State Park.

Too bad I will not have any vacation time left over after the Power Tour. Maybe next year, we are already planning to travel up to see Mt. Rushmore.

KBMWRS What did the moron say today?

Well when you guys pick a date and place let us know. I might drop by. If I'm still around. I got to get heading west in late July.

Still need some more of the "local" guys to speak up both to say they are interested (or "in") and also to voice ideas and suggestions.

Pat's idea of heading up the Dells way is a viable option. Beautiful country this time of year. I'm not familiar with the route he suggests but trust its a good one. I think the Door County option might be too far a trek for many. From the Chicago area its a good 4-4.5 hours just to get up there. The Dells is in the 2.5-3 hour neighborhood. For guys coming in from maybe Iowa or MI or Kentucky those extra hours start adding up. What do you guys think? Any ideas on other areas or venues we could try to include? I'd like to maybe try and find a nice car show or cruise event we could all participate in as well along the way. What about the timing? Extended weekend kind of thing? How many days door to door do you have/want to spend?

I think maybe 3 day kind of thing would be more than enough. If we break the drives up into a couple days like on the power tour it's not so bad. Finding a few points of interest each day. Then whoever wants to go can figure in their drive time.

It's really going to depend on who is involved. Where we can find a center starting point and radiate around that point. Or pick up people along the way.

Avoiding major highways and cruising the back country would be the best.

Out of the gate you select a weekend that is a no go for me. I have to host customers at the Packer game that weekend. Now you KNOW I would rather do anything other than have to watch that crap but....I do.

I was just throwing out the only fall car show in the area.

Have fun at the packer game! Haha!

I'm not sure my wife or I will have any vacation time left this year. When I get back from the Power Tour I plan to get the 67 going again. Late summer or early fall would give me enough time to get it together and sort out the bugs. My wife's family is in Aurora and Naperville so that would be a good point for us to get to on day one (8 hour drive from here). School starts down here on August 2nd. I might be able to make a road trip on my own if she can't go with me. We will have to see what date and location is.

That would cool. I'd probably be running alone too.

The more people we have interested may determine the route. Maybe we go south.

We have lots of options. Toss out some ideas.

yeah, I don't want to dictate any time or location as I don't know yet if I can do it but if it gets set then that will help determine if indeed I can make it work. We did the Myrtle Beach Bash one year because it coincided with my wife's Fall Break and I had some vacation time left. I don't know if October would be too cold in Wisconsin, Northern Illinois as I recall could still be pretty nice or it could be cold and wet depending on the year!

October would be ok if the first week or two. After that you take your chances. I think September would be best personally, but with kids being in school it might be harder for some.

Nobody is committing to any specific plan or time yet. Just trying to get ideas on routes.

oh sorry. I'm just trying to think if I can go based on the dates. September would be nice time of year. My wife would definitely not be able to go in September though. That is unless we could do it in a weekend. School gets out at 1pm on Fridays. We could get up North late on a Friday Night, do something on a Saturday and head home on Sunday. But again don't let me influence others ideas.
