Fueling question
« on: October, 06, 2010, 10:45:50 AM »
I have noticed every time I put fuel in Amber I get a drip of gas out of the filler neck that drips on the bumper. To stop this I have to fill the car very slow. Make no difference where I buy fuel or how I insert the fuel nozzle I still get the drip. Looks like gas is backing up in the filler neck and running out. I have replaced the tank and I saw no issues with filler neck that would cause this. Is anyone else seeing this on a 67 or 68 Mustang.

I've got it down to a science.  Put the nozzle in and rotate it until the handle is at the 2 o'clock position, then push it towards the car.  Fill slowly and listen when you get close to full so you can hear when it starts to back up the pipe.

Been doing this for almost 10 years and I rarely have issues.

Had that little mod done and all I do is place the pump nozzle in the tank and put it on full flow. Clicks off when full with no spill.

Yes, I need to find my spare filling neck and send it off to Craig to modify.  Maybe today.  Until then I've been able to fill Shag with the minimal amount of spillage by (as suggested by JeffTepper), with the pump on my left side, enter the filler neck from a 9 o'clock direction.  Starts off with a little spillage but after I twist the nozzle a couple degrees I'm able to fill all the way.  Watch next time it wont work......

Due the the depth of the taillight panel as compared to the position of the bumpers, the 65/66's are the easiest to fill with the nozzle in the normal 6 o'clock positon.  67/68's are much more difficult and if you have the finned taillight panels or a flip gas cap it get's more difficult.

I would agree the flip open cap does make it difficult.
