Author Topic: NEW 67 Custom Scoop Idea, what do you think? (Read 695 times)

Well, I haven't actually started restoring my 67, but I've got a ton of ideas, so decided to put one of my ideas to the front of the line.

It seems that the only scoop options are the "Shelby" type, which in my opinion is a little dated and overdone. So I decided to start with a simple prototype to give me an idea of what they are going to look like. I'm going to make a few of these changing the design a little.

On the 67, you have the fake scoops, but Ford went to a lot of trouble with metal brackets holding the originals on. Here is a pic of the 67 with the factory fake scoops removed.

I started with a paper template, really basic here.

Then I took a sheet of aluminum and hammer formed it into the shape that I wanted. I cut some reliefs into it as the bend was too sharp for me to just hammer. Then I TIG welded the relief cuts together. Here is what the scoop looks like after I Tig welded, filed and sanded it smooth.

Sorry that I left out all the details, but I didn't actually decide to post anything until after it was already welded together...I also hesitated as I've not seen any design that has 2 side scoops instead of the one piece "Shelby" and like many others, I want my car to be modded and yet unique. But then I thought...who cares if someone decides to copy my designs, that is...if they have the skills, and besides, don't we all copy to one degree or another? So here's my scoop design.

and the front view. Next, I am going to weld some brackets inside to mount it to the body at the factory holes and I will also weld some "L" shaped brackets to the inside front to mount a screen. Then I'll be able to fabricate an inner duct to allow installing a hose to cool the rear brakes as Shelby did...if I want.

This is completely hand fabricated and is only a prototype at this point, so the fit is not as close as the finished product will be. As I said, I'm going to play with a few additional designs, both for looks and to see which designs fit better and are easier to make. I may even sell them when I'm finished. Does this look interesting, and would anyone be interested in a set, not cheap, I'm thinking $300-$400 for a set of four. Lots of hours in the fabrication of a single scoop.

So what do you think?

:nta I think it will be sweet. Make sure to keep updating. I'd like to see the finished product.

Looks good. Could you start with some aluminum exhaust pipe and get a fit with less work? Possibly sloping the back closer to the car.

Sorry Pete, as far as I know exhaust pipe is not really aluminum, but steel with an aluminum coating (aluminumized) to make it resistant to corrosion.

I think it looks ok, but if it were me, I'd cut them down so that they didn't stick out quite so much and blend them more towards the rear.

Thanks for the comments. I actually made the scoop larger than necessary so that I would have room to fit it in. After I do a little trimming, I'll re post. I also have another design I'm working on, which has a significantly larger opening. I'll post that too, soon. Thanks for the comments, I appreciate the feedback.

Great idea. I would make it more of a wedge shape toward the read and only sticking up about an inch or so. Kind of like the vents on the side of a 65 fastback.

You know make then subtle. They would be more of a, "Wow" factor at shows that way. Sometimes less is more. I think they would take less fab time as well. Just my .02.....

Trimmed down some and more blending and they're good to go.

Good idea making a dual scoop there.

What if you ran them back to actually blend in with the c-scoop area. I think the part that I am having problems with is the indent on the c-scoop and then it goes back up into another scoop. I think it would look better if it worked with the existing lines like the shelby scoops did. I think the idea is there, now it is a matter of fine tuning.

Well, the response has got me thinking about the design so I stopped working on the original one above and have been working on 67 scoop 2.0. Hopefully this weekend I'll make some progress and I'll try and post pics this weekend.

While you are at it... make them functional. Or at least make the bottom scoop functional to the rear wheel well to brake drums area.
Just another thought.
