Oil Change
« on: September, 13, 2010, 03:11:15 PM »
I'm going to have to drain the oil whenever I put in the oil sending unit that came with the dash cluster. Fun.  :amaz

What kind of oil do ya'll use? 10w-40? 30? Synthetic or not?

Any opinions on filters? I was thinking a K&N one since those are readily available at local auto supply stores. Right now there is a Ford Racing filter on there and I haven't seen anyone in town carry those.

First, the oil does not need draining to install the sending unit.

I use Royal Purple 15/40 or 20/50 I think. I need oils with zinc. Valvoline racing is also good.

I use only Motorcraft filters.

Motorcraft FL-1A.

Since you don't drive it, any oil will do      :wm?

Oil won't pour out of the hole when I remove the hard line and put in the sending unit?

Nope.  Yank that line out and replace the sender.  Easy day.

If you do it while the engine's running, then yes, oil will pour out of the hole.  :scar

Hey now, you can see what you're working on right there in the picture.  No A/C or PS in the way.  Now if you put a wrench on there and round off the fitting, well, then you are in for some work.  But it should be relatively straight forward for you.

And you still don't need to drain the oil.

Well if nothing is going to pour out, then yeah I won't bother draining the oil. Of course maybe I should? Not really sure when is the last time Gertie had an oil change.

Normally, you need this extension for the sender to screw into. This picture also shows a tapped hole for a mechanical gauge to fit into. Not needed in your case.

Now the weird part.....I didn't feel like taking a pic of mine so I did a quick search. Found this pic........it was taken by johnpro back in '06....and is of the car I am driving. I think I need a drink now.

Oddly enough, I said the same thing to my wife. (The pic. is from an '06 post on VMF)

I tightened the plate last week. Got a full turn on the back bolt and about a quarter turn on the front one. Cleaned up the oil on that corner too......

Ahhhh.....the little things one runs across.

Also, not much on this, but I just use Motorcraft FL-1A filters.  I usually buy 3-4 at a time so I always have one on hand, as I hate going for an oil change and they are out of stock on the FL-1A, and I have 3 vehicles that use them.  I refuse to put a Fram or STP on my Mustang or my F-150.  I'm sure they work ok, but the price isn't all that more expensive to get the Motorcraft filter.

I'd definitely recommend that extension.  I have one and it makes life much easier, keeping things away from the block.

Motorcraft FL-1A filters are good, as are Wix.  I usually run Wix 51515 filters and Valvoline VR-1 oil.

I use VR-1 also but I think Kat has a roller cam 5.0 so zinc not as critical.

Married to Tara, that makes me the TARA-fied one!

Change it.  Do it.  You don't know when it was changed or what's in it...so set your baseline starting now.

I use VR-1, but as mentioned, you don't need the high-zinc because you've got a roller motor...I try to get synthetics for my old cars (even my 99 camry with 150k miles...it's old!) but hey, millions of cars are running around on dino-oil with no problems.

I will admit to using the K&N filters just because I love the "nut" on the end of them that allows for easier removal.  Just remember, even though it has that handy nut on it, you just want to hand tighten it during installation.  don't crank down on it with a breaker bar  :lol

+1...I always run the Wix but mostly because it is usually a choice of that or the 'house brand' when I go to Oreilly.

Too many post to read in my limited amount of time.

I use PHRAM PH8A filters.   I use Valvoline 20-50 racing oil.

I have used this combination for years and it seems to work well.  I had a Chevy 350 run 150k with it and then we tore it down for a rebuild, we thought it might need it since it was used on a farm and all, got real hard use/abuse.  when we tore it down ll we did was clean it up and put new rings and bearings in.  It ran another 100k before it threw a rad through the block.

I use synthetic in my Excursion V10 and I use Delo 400 in my F350 powerstroke.

It all seems to work for me.

If you're driving to Buffalo and Spring on Saturday...it wouldn't hurt it to have fresh oil and filter.  That's a good number of miles.

Question about that extension... I was looking in my NPD catalog and there's 2 kinds.

65-66 - 289, w/gauges, steel, 4.3" long extension, works on 67-73 as well

67-73 - 289, 302, 351

The sending unit you sent me is for a 66.. but I have a 302. Which extenstion should I get? Is the one for 302 going to fit the 66 sending unit I have?

A 289 and a 302 are pretty much identical on the outside of the block.  I'd think the one for a '66 would work but if nothing else one way to find out is give it a try.

The way it works is that oil will go to the sending unit via the passage in the extension and then the psi will be converted into an electric current and sent to the gauge.  So, really as long as you get the oil from your engine to the sender under pressure the gauge will register.

So get the 66 extension and give it a whirl.  You can't hurt anything.

Kat,
I believe I have an extra oil sending unit extension if you want it.  If you do, PM me.

Both Shag and Red are running NAPA's Gold 1515 filter.  Brad Penn 20/50 in Shag and their 15/40 in Red.

I called NPD to ask them, and the guy said try the 67-73 one for 302. Something about the size of threads on the 302 block blah blah blah.
