I really need to get the fuel gauge working or hurry and install the new dash cluster. Was driving Gertrude and ran out of gas at the stop light.  :amaz
Luckily it happened only a few blocks away from home so we were able to get home and get the gas can and get her to the gas station.

Good side though, had a few people today how Gertrude looks good. Guess a little wash and wax did help some after all!

Glad you weren't too far from home Kat. One suggestion, get a AAA premium roadside service membership. We don't want you running out of gas driving in the sticks or the hood without some help close by.

Believe it or not, I've twice stalled out, ie, ran out of gas, while pulling into a gas station.  One time I was able to coast it in to the pump, another time I needed help pushing it up to the pump.

Back when I was too poor to buy parts, or more appropriately, not smart enough to buy the parts I really needed, I would write down the odometer when I filled up, then keep track of the miles I drove.  I think I would use something like 15 mpg average, so around 150-180 miles I'd start looking for a gas station.  Was a risky game and, as I said, I lost twice.

If I had an odometer, I could keep track of when to buy gas.  :lol

The fuel gauge did work the day I picked up the stang. Then on the long road trip home, first time we filled up with gas... it stopped and stuck at 1/4 tank and been at 1/4 tank since. I've only had to fill the tank a couple times since I got her home in May. Thats how little I drive the stang.

Do you need a sending unit?  I have almost a brand new repop sitting in the garage (just need to remember which box I put it in), it is less than a year old.  Since, I'm running efi, there is a place for a return line...but it could always be capped.  I don't know it I still have it, but somewhere in the box of parts may have the original one that I took out of my car...IIRC, I may have backed over it and tossed it.

I haven't messed with anything to see if it's the fuel gauge or sending unit that is messed up. So not sure if I'll need one or not.

I'm taking a wild guess it's the sending unit or the wires between the sending unit and the gauge.

Shouldn't be a bad fix.

Not long after I bought my car I purchased the kit for a whole new gas tank and sending unit = roughly $100.

I was under the car one day and noticed the previous owner had knocked a whole in the tank at some point and had "patched it" by putting a sheet metal screw through a piece of raw hide then screwing it into the tank.  Needless to say, I was a tad nervous about that one and very happy when the new tank arrived.

Easy swap out...

PO installed a new gas tank. How long ago, I don't know... but it's a newish tank. Luckily I don't have to mess with putting in a new one.

I just thought it was funny that it was working, and the first time we filled up with gas.. it stuck at 1/4 tank. To me, that makes me think it's something to do with the sending unit/floater. Of course driving her down the interstate and the bumps of the road might have knocked some wiring loose?

I have the dash cluster from JohnPro's 66 but not installed yet. The fuel gauge in that is suppose to work fine. I wonder.. could I temporarily undo the wiring from the current fuel gauge and hook it to the fuel gauge in the dash cluster, just to see if it's the gauge itself thats bad or it's something with wiring/sending unit?

It would be best to attach the entire dash cluster, as you'll need the appropriate wiring to the Constant Voltage Regulator and grounds as well.  To do the test, you'll need to put the key in ACC or RUN; ACC is preferred.

Bleh. Pain in the butt then. I'll just mess with the fuel gauge issue after I install the new cluster. I still have to worry about the battery location and brakes before I go tinker with other things.
