I need new plug wires
« on: August, 17, 2010, 06:06:37 AM »
Does anyone on here run Moroso Ultra 40 (the cheaper non-race version) or Taylor plug wires?  I have the Ford Racing 9mm wires and they dry rot after a few years, but the price is reasonable.  They have pretty high resistance compared to other wires though.  I know many people jump on the MSD bandwagon based on their reputation with ignition boxes, but I have done some research and found many complaints that durability has gone down the crapper in the last few years. Their wire material is overseas stuff.  I was initially looking at getting their Superconductor series wires. So is anyone running Moroso or Taylor wires and do you have any radio/RFI interference, or do you have any recommendations?

I've run Taylor on other cars with great success. Never had them on the stang, though.

the liberal defines success by how many people he has managed to help through government action; the conservative defines success by how many people he has freed from need of such assistance.

I ran Taylors on my 89, they might be on hubby's 66 now, not sure.  It was nice having those cut to fit, never had a problem with wires after I got those.

Which Taylors did you two run?  Did you notice any radio interference?  Also, how was the durability?

No exp with the other 2 brands, but I've been running the cut to fit MSD 8.5mm superconductor wires since I finished the resto in 04. Been tracking the car since with the same set and no problems. Don't know about any interference with the radio since I don't have one in the car!

Here are the two I was considering:

Taylor has the Race 409 and the Thundervolt 50 series wires, but they are +$100 and are probably serious overkill.  They are also 10.4mm wires and would be an eyesore and a pain to route.

Its been ages, but I think they were the 8mm race fit, but I probably got them around 10 years ago, had no problems with them, didn't notice any interference, but with the 8mm I don't think you would.  As far as durability, they are still around in the garage somewhere (if they are not in hubby's car) even thought I got rid of the original car, couldn't get rid of a nice set in good condition.

You were close, but no cigar.  The wire on the old Moostang and on the fastback are the Taylor 409 wires.  They're 10.4mm.  Like moostang said, no interference.  It's just difficult to find nice loom separators...ie I don't have 'em.  With the ignition setup and coil that I have, I wouldn't want to run anything smaller without fear of cross-firing.

I found these vertical looms for them:  http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TAY-42563/?rtype=10

Are those the 409's in your pics in your sig?

I have the thundervolt. It is a DD car, with around 90k and six years on the wire. No issues at all.

Okay, you got me.... that's what I meant to ask.

So we have a husband and wife "tag team" onboard here?

This could get very interesting.

Put Taylor 8mm wires on the old flathead a few years ago.  Not a lot of miles yet, but they seem to work fine

Interesting topic. I was discussing it with my husband about changing out the wires in Gertrude. PO put some Accel 8.8mm yellow/black ones on it. Does anyone know if Accel is any good? Or should I look into something better? Either way I hate the yellow wires and it will be changed. They don't match anything.  :lol

My dad put a set of accel wires on my car, this is what they looked like after sitting for 20 years, I had to snap them in half to throw them away they had formed the way they sat.

I hate my Taylor wires.  The jackets are 100% silicone, which makes them a) look really weird (glossy neon blue color), and b) prone to damage.  Sure, they're fairly heat resistant, but it's easy to take chunks out of them.  Assembly was also a PITA, and I've pulled a couple of the plug ends apart already.  One of them I had to tweak with some pliers just to get it to stay on the spark plug, and even then it still doesn't stay all that well.  (the plug ends are the ones that come already assembled)

Next time around, I think I'm going with Moroso wires.  The only reason I didn't get MSD's was because they don't offer a 135* plug boot.
