Appraisers....
« on: July, 19, 2010, 03:56:40 PM »
Took the '66 to the only local appraiser in this area. I used him on the other cars and the insurance companies like the idea of a "certified" appraisal in the records. He did look the car over real good and found nothing to comment negative on except there being no A/C. That will be remedied soon. He liked the AOD, 9" with gears, and the disc brake upgrades. He also liked the color a lot and as he said....matching wheels. He agreed that the switch was a good upgrade for me. Anyway, he ran the info and came back with a value of $21,700. As always, better off having one stolen as compared to selling for market price.....lol.

My staff at work always asked me if I worry about leaving my car at work with the top down.
I just tell them my car is worth more stolen than I could sell it for. Then I could buy a better one with the money.

Who is it insured with that you can say that about leaving it at work?

I have it insured with my regular Insurance company. They don't have all the restrictions that the collector companies do.
It is insured as an agreed value policy based on my appraisal.

Cool.  I'm using Chrome, no work restrictions, 10,000 miles (which I don't think I'll hit), and very competitive rates.

As for the appraisal, I think its great that Pete made out like he did.  I was pleasantly surprised when the appraiser rated my car at what I had in it.

Yeah it works for me. The car is just a driver and I drive it as much as I can, so I don't want to have to deal with a ton of restrictions.

Yep.....hate restrictions and most likely pay a bit more..... I drove the last one 11,800 miles in 20 months...and not a day of it was for work. :vic

I'm glad you brought up Chrome, as I've been trying to figure out who to go with for insurance now that the car is almost ready for the road. Seems like the 'classic' insurers are easy to get an Agreed Value policy with, but they would really rather you not actually drive your car much. And rarely, if ever, to work. Did they require you to get an appraisal?

@ AzPete: sounds like you got a good appraiser. That figure got to give you some peace of mind.

Those number on mine do give me a good feeling for sure. I use State Farm under my normal policy. They underwrite it out to another company but I have never asked who actually covers it that way. As long as SF works with me, I really have no concerns as to who they deal with. I may have to check on Chrome just to compare.

I had to get an actual appraisal done for Chrome.  The guy came out to the house and appraised the car for $125, and told me if I take it to him within 12 months (the car wasn't done yet) he would update the appraisal for free.

The Chrome quote was something like $120 for a stock car at $35,000 and $135 for a "modified" car at $35,000.  Although the car could pass for stock, I have a 5.0 block, a T-5, 17" wheels, etc, I thought there was enough changes that it really meets the modified definition as they have it on the appraisal form.  The other companies rates go up 2 or 3 times if you put it down as modified vice stock.  The appraisal I got was for $38,000 and he told me that if I kept up the quality of the work I was doing to expect 45-50k when it was done so my rate will likely go up accordingly.

Thanks for the tip on Chrome.  I just called them for rates on my ride.  It looks like I will have to get an appraisal which can be done by my body man / car builder.  Once I have that the rates will be about $80 more than my Grundy policy but I will have the ability to drive tht car when I want or where I want as long as it is not my DD.  It looks like I may be switching.  This came along at a good time since my policy expires at the end of the month.

I am making the switch over to Chrome (ANPAC) due to less restrictions.  As I mentioned earlier it is a bit more money ($317 every 6 months) but is worth it imo.  The only part I was unsure of is getting an appraisal to make sure I am covered as well as the insurance company.  I was please to see the appraisal come out where it did.  It was a bit more than I thought it would.  It appraised at $88k.
