I was at the Vintage Mustang Owners Association car show today when an E-Z got picked up by the wind and landed on my car. There are deep scratches on the hood, cowl and decklid, a small cut in the vinyl top and damage to the right wheel opening. The MCA Grand National is three weeks away so I'm hoping they will overlook this damage so I won't have to rush the repair. My other concern is the Grande stripe since my friend who made it no longer has his graphics business. I'm thinking that the left quarter and right fender will need to be blended.

Anyone have an NOS right front fender molding?

Wow, that really sucks.

First question, what is an E-Z?

Second, depending on what an E-Z is, was it related to show or would the show insurance otherwise cover the damages?

EZ up, pop-up, etc. It's a pop-up shade thingy, that should not be near classic cars unless secured down. Sounds like someone at the show screwed up royally!

Oh, wow, that's awful! Those tents should not be permitted anywhere near the show field.

I imagine Charles Turner will see this, but I'll also make sure the judges are aware of this at the Grand National and will not deduct for the damage.

Very sorry to hear of this. We used a couple EZ up's last weekend but we secured them well just to prevent such a situation.

I think you are correct. There is not enough room to blend within on the hood, the deck maybe. It would take a very skilled painter to do it.

There is bound to be someone out there capable of a "dead panel" repair. He would have to be able to tint the color and spray test cards until he achieves a match. That's becoming a pretty rare skill these days.

I'd bust out the sharpie on the top. it won't fix it but it certainly will not make it worse.

Like Cmayna said, at the show last weekend it was breezy with an occasional gust. Cm and KBMWRS had the foresight to suggest securing our EZ ups, so we duct-taped them to a tree.

I've seen some EZ ups that have a vent flap at the center peak of the canopy. Does that prevent them from flying off?

Securing them to a solid object or the ground is the only way to secure them. Even the stakes they use into the ground do not work good. I have used 4 cement blocks with good luck but then I never leave one unattended if I own it. I have also tied them to the chairs we sit in and all is well as long as the chair is in use. We normally don't leave the car alone at shows. Saw one guy that had a complete cover over his car plus it extended back to give room to sit under. He had plates under his tires.

Yes it was one of the VMOA's tents. Thinking back they had nothing securing them down. Most of the vendors that had E-Z ups had them secured to water bottles or concrete blocks. Someone told me that at last years show a radiator from a vendor booth got blown into the side of someone's car.

They are saying the insurance coverage will be provided by MCA since they are a regional club. I'm wondering if last year's occurrence was covered by the MCA insurance if the rates for MCA will go up because of this club having two claims in two years. I'm leaning towards making a claim with my insurance (Grundy) but I'm sure they are going to subrogate against VMOA.

MCA Insurance would have to have been applied for and in effect prior to this event for it to be used.

With two claims in as many years, especially when one is based on their stupidity, I would be in favor of denying them MCA insurance for a year.

I really doubt they'll be able to blend that paint, considering it's a metallic. I think it's going to need a total repaint because the paint differences will be visible to judges.

I've seen the same thing happen too many times.

I wouldn't paint the whole car though. Like Sluggo said, the decklid can probably be blended within the panel. The hood, cowl, and fender probably needs painting/blending to make the repair disappear. It's really not that big of a deal for a decent shop.

I can tell you that I WON'T be attending that show ever. If they can't get it right after over 20 years of putting on a show. . .

Wow, Nelson, so sorry to hear about that damage! I hope you can get it repaired quickly and thoroughly. Your CJ Grande is a beautiful example that I hope to see again soon.

A similar thing almost happened at last year's MCA National in Van Nuys, CA. The helicopter used for those who paid for short rides at the show was landing a short distance away on the air field, and a poorly secured EZ-up got loose and started rolling towards the concours trailered class. Fortunately, it stopped before I had to grab it, and we lashed it down more securely.

Sorry to hear about this Nelson.

It will not be a problem at all when your car is at the WA show. Just bring some previous pics, maybe the magazine articles as a safeguard. Just be sure you or your wife are by the car when the judging starts. If there are any problems, just come and find me.

Hope you are able to get it repaired, it's going to be tough to blend it.

That is really bad damage! Hard to believe that an EZ up can do that, but we all know what the wind is like in the Bay Area. They should have secured the damn thing. As the guy who did the stripes for your car, I'm sorry I'm no longer in the graphics business so I could help you get it back to it's pristine condition. We have talked and I gave you the number of the people who bought my files. You indicated that they did a set of Grande stripes for another Mustang recently, so that gives me hope that they still have the file. The name of the file is "Grande", so it's hard to miss it, and they just sold a set so I'll bet they haven't dumped it. Again, it really hurts to see a car as beautifully restored as your Grande damaged like that. There are very few cars of any breed restored to that level. I have to agree that the damaged panels will probably have to be completely repainted. Hopefully you can find a guy with the right talents to blend the fender and the quarter. With your professional contacts I know you can find that guy. Fortunately, the hood, cowl and trunk lid can be removed and repainted separately without having to blend the paint. The vinyl roof will probably have to be replaced. I'd be heart sick if it were even my driver 69 convertible. Keep me informed on how the repair is going, particularly the striping.

Well now the fun is going to start. The insurance adjuster (Grundy Ins) cut the estimate down 65%. The biggest problem is that all parts needed are not on the estimate. He said they would pay it on a supplement. The problem is I will be the one buying these parts from different vendors and I need the money up front. I told him I would give the phone number of each of the vendors if he wants to verify the prices. Plus a supplement is normally for hidden damage. If it is damaged and you see it on the initial inspection it should be on the estimate.

At this point I'm going to see what the insurance for the club is going to do. Only problem with that I still have not heard from anyone. The club asked for my information on Friday which seemed strange since they have my entry information.

I've never heard of a Hagerty insured have this sort of problem.

I'm late to this thread, but I'm sorry to see that happen to anybody's car when they have that much monetary & emotional investment in it. Especially since the first 2 cars I bought with my own money were both 69 coupes, and the second was a Grande. Loved that car. Hope you get everything sorted out to your satisfaction.

Grundy Insurance / Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance is now asking to have another independent appraiser look at the vehicle. One that they are hiring. I've told him that I don't have much of an issue with the initial estimate except that there are no prices for the parts, clearcoat labor was left off and some other R&I times. I don't think a second appraisal will matter since the first appraiser agrees on the damage but won't verify the prices or come up with his own.

They have purposely underwritten the estimate and are hoping that I will go away.
