I am tired of having to dis connect the transmission lines every time I remove the radiator. I am about to install my new aluminum radiator and thought I would add the transmission cooler in the below line. I would mount it in front of the radiator on the radiator support. What do y'all think?

I personally don't like those types of coolers. I prefer the tube/finned type with multiple tube passes. The bigger it is - the better it will cool.

And I mounted mine in front of the radiator as well.

When I was running the c4 in my fastback, I used a tranny cooler that was in front of my radiator, and by passed the one in the radiator. I didn't use the type that you show, but one that was flat like the one pictured above. I never had any problems with the tranny getting too hot. I'm not sure how well that one would work with cooling the tranny fluid. It's made to bolt to the frame rail, where the air would flow down the fins. If it's placed in front of the radiator, you won't get as much air flow over the fins. It's been a long time since I did any thermodynamic/heat transfer calc, but you do need good air flow over the fins to get good heat transfer from the fluid to the air. I'm sure that someone in here has done in much more recently than I.

I'd stay away from that one - they are not good at cooling, but are designed to look cool.

The tube type abov e is good, and likely fine for any Mustang. For towing (10,000 lb trailers), I use a plate type, as they are 30-40 more efficient for a given size (higher ratio of fluid volume to surface area wetted). The plate type is all you will see used in fluid to air industrial coolers for that reason.

Not to hijack, but I haven't installed my cooler yet because I have factory AC and the condenser is in front of the radiator. I don't want yet another heat exchanger scabbed onto the nose of my car.

What other locations might work? Something out of sight would be preferable. Inside the fender behind the headlight bucket?

I would NOT recommend the one in that ebay auction. It's definitely not for street use. Here is a similar Moroso one on Summit, and in their notes says that it's not for street use. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOR-41200/

Stacked plate type are typically the most efficient and are more compact in size, but tend to cost more. B&M Supercoolers are pretty good and come in different sizes: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70264/

If you want something out of sight, you can mount a fan-cooled one in the rear axle area on either the rear floor pan vertical portion (above muffler hangers) or above the fuel tank/front of trunk floors. Run your lines down the trans tunnel to the transmission and you are good to go. It will definitely need a fan on it since there isn't much airflow there. Try to locate it where debris won't damage it. An example where not to put it is on the outside of the front inner fenders, where flying rocks could damage it. You could always just buy a small fan and mount it to the regular cooler and save a few bucks :vic

Or do what I did - get one from a swap meet @ 5$ - talk them down to $3. Fab some brackets, install and bada bing you're in bidness.

3-4 years ago Johnpro gave me a B&M cooler for Red's AOD setup. It is mounted passenger side in front of the radiator. I though am running the lines to both the cooler and the radiator bottom tank. Never have had a problem.

Besides Janshutz, how often do you change out a radiator?

A better solution would be to put a 5-speed in it, and ditch the automatic and trans cooler all together. :nk

Funny, I'm thinking of putting a T5 in Red. It would wake that little Mustang up a lot!!! But no work on Red until Shag is up and running like a bull!!.
