Author Topic: Calibrating Autometer Speedo - Now with PICS! (Read 1142 times)

Ok. FINALLY, my gauge swap in the '69 is complete. The only thing left to do is calibrate the speedometer. This is an electrical Autometer Ultra Light II gauge. The instructions talk about hooking up a calibration button to the two lugs on the back. Is this just any push button type switch? Can I just use one I have laying in the garage, or is it a specific device I have to buy?

I'm a little confused on this one.

BTW, I moved the fuel and voltage gauges to the A-pillar. I wasn't sure I would like it there, but I actually do. Now I have to sell the bigger gauges that I already threw the boxes for, even though, neither has seen more than 20 minutes of use, I'll probably get 50 cents on the dollar for them if I'm lucky.

John,
I have the Autometer Ultralight in the fastback, so it should calibrate the same as the Ultralight II, and I didn't have to hook up a button to the back of the speedo. On the back of the speedo, you should just have the normal wiring from the VSS and a 12V and ground wire. To calibrate the speedo, You just have to press in the trip/reset button while your turning the ignition on. And then hit it again when you get to the start of the 2 mile stretch. When you get to the end of the 2 mile stretch, come to a complete stop and hit the trip button again. In the LED display it will count the number of signals that the speedo receives from the sending unit.

Does this make sense or should I put done the caffeine?

At the site of autometer , you will find instruction on how to calibrate but it is like 66gt350 said.
I think all electronic speedo's are calibrated the same way.

Ok Dave...wanna clarify that? Do Autometer guages vary from line to line or are you talking different manufacturers?

John -- Are you sure those are Ultra Lite II's? They look exactly the same as my Ultra Lite's. They do look awesome in there!!

My AutoMeter Phantom speedo calibrates that way. Problem is finding an accurate two-mile stretch. I calibrated mine off another car. That'll have to do until I run across one of those specially marked streches of highway. I don't know how accurate interstate mile markers are. I have seen blue signs around (TX) that say something about two-mile section start and stop - presumably for odometer verification or something...

Different manufacturer's.

Son's car has the intrument cluster that UP offered. It's made by Classic Instruments. The speedo calibration is adjusted by a series of miniature switches on the back of the gauge that have to be thrown manually with a small (jeweler's) screwdriver.
