Need Photo to Line Art Help
« on: March, 30, 2010, 08:57:26 AM »
Can anyone convert a digital color photograph to line art for me?  I designed a special award for MCA in honor of Lark Bragg and it looks good.  However, the trophy shop said that it would be improved if we could convert the photo of Lark to line art, but I don't know how to do it.  The photo is engraved on glass and it would be crisper if it were in line art.

We gave out the first award at the Pensacola show and have four more to do with the next one being given in June at Oklahoma.

We used Daytona Trophy for our car show's awards (plaques).  They took this:

And made it into this:

Point is:
1) A trophy company should be able to do that for you, but
2) Maybe you can get Daytona Trophy to provide the conversion.
After...

I found a tutorial how to do it and tested it with Trouble/Murphy.

I'll do it for your image if you think it'll work for your Trophy company:

Can you control the contrast on that? Is it an action for photoshop?

Just tried it in photoshop.

4 clicks will get you this.

I'd be happy to help also. A few more clicks prior to desaturating the photo would probably get a little better result.

I could bring the contrast up a bit more...I don't have PhotoShop.  I used GIMP.

It was more than 4 steps for me...Had to desat, then selective gausian blur a new layer, then change opacity of the new layer, then change the layering mode to Dodge.   From there I could reapply the lined layers with Multiply layers, and then modify the contrast to really get it sharp.

Let us know how we can help Laurie :)

Photoshop,
Image: Desaturate, Filter: find edges, Image: levels (bring black slider to the right until it meets the black edge of the histogram, then move gray and white slider over top of the black slider.) File: Save

I need to spend more time with gimp. I'm pretty sure it can do anything Photoshop can. It's quite different in how it gets there though.

What would be the best way to get the photo to you?  I can upload it on my website and link it.

Here's the link to the photo. If it's easier I can e-mail it to you.  Thanks!

You'll see the main problem with the photo is that the light isn't on his face because it's washed out by the banner in the background.

Oh, you're awesome!  Let me send it to my trophy guy and see what he says.  It looks just like what he wanted.

Steve, I hate to ask, but my trophy guy said he needs something that's called a line or simple contour, rather than the pencil sketch.  There's an example of a simple contour drawing on this website:

What type of award are you actually trying to end up with?  I do laser engraving on the side and I can actually engrave photographs on wood and acrylic.  I use special software to turn the image into the dot pattern that the laser can engrave awesome detail.  I will play a little with the photo to see if I can come up with something somewhat like the sample you linked.

Based of the sample you linked I wonder if something like this might work?  I can modify it for more or less detail if you want.  I can give it to you in vector artwork, in various Corel or Photoshop formats too if it helps.

I couldn't get the image to open, just got the square with a red x in it.    :(

We're putting the image on a glass award.  We did the first award by etching, but the picture isn't as clear as we would like.  My trophy guy will use a sandblaster for the next four awards, but we're trying to get a better picture first.
