Author Topic: Thinking about upgrading to a 4bbl carb and intake (Read 570 times)

Hey everyone,

I have been considering switching my old autolite 2100 and stock intake for a new 600 cfm 4bbl and an aluminum intake. My engine is stock (as far as I know) and I want to use my car as a daily driver. After reading how much ease Sluggo had with his new Summit carb, I was thinking about getting one and bolting it on top of an Edelbrock performer (not RPM) manifold. Is this a good combination? Is there a better intake? Is there any real difference between brands or styles of intakes that you can feel on the street?

Also, the choke on my 2100 is controlled by a heat tube rising up from the exhaust manifold. The Summit carb comes only with an electric choke. How would I wire up this new choke? My wiring knowledge is rudimentary at best, so this is the part of the installation that I am most uncomfortable with.

Any other advice?

The summit carb would be a good coice, I'm running one and like it. The choke can be wired to a wire that is hot when the key is on, or to the stator of the alt. If you are uncomfortable with wiring, I'd lok for a wire that is hot with the key on and tap into it (don't use the coil wire).

The performer is a good coice for the street; the Wieand Stealth is also a good choice. You'll find proponents of both, but most agree they are both suitable for a stock engine.

The other day I read that someone suggested clipping into the Heater blower motor wire right there on the fire wall. I thought that was a pretty good idea and could not think of a reason not too. Good luck on your upgrade and give us pics with your progress report.

'67 up AC cars won't have the heater wire (motor is in the cabin), and the wire they do have is not hot when the key is on (the heated positive is switched by the speed switch, not the ground). On a 65-66 or '67-68 non AC car, it's a good idea.

Thanks for the replies. There isn't a huge price difference between the Edelbrock performer RPM and the Weiand Stealth. I think I'll end up going with the Weiand.

Are they the same height? I thought I read that the Weiand was a little taller and may cause some issues?

I used a Weiand Stealth in a '66 with a stock hood, '85 302, stock '66 mounts, and a Holley 650 and a standard 3" x 14 chrome after market cleaner. I liked the combination in all aspects.

The 65/66 engine sits a lot lower than a 67/68 though.

I do have an aftermarket chrome air cleaner which I think is only about 3" high. If I remember correctly, the stock air cleaner sat a bit higher than the chrome one does.

I have the Wieand Stealth on my '68 289, stock air cleaner. Have had both Holley and Summit carbs, no issues. It was close with the holley, about 3/4 inch or so.

If your going to just do an intake/carb only change. I have used the ProComp :beatair gap with a 600 holley with real good results.
The choke is wired to the plug for my back up lights, simpe short distance to a keyed 12vt source.
