New proud owner of a 67 land Yacht
« on: March, 13, 2010, 05:53:27 AM »
I'm not sure what I was thinking but somehow ended up as high bidder on this peach on a coparts auction, It's a 67 Galaxie fastback, 390ci, C6 auto AC car, deluxe interior and thats all I know, gonna head to Vegas in two weeks to pick her up and bring it back to the shop to see if she can be saved. I'm hoping that it's still the original powertrain but 43 years does strange things to cars.
P.S. I havn't mentioned this to the wife yet not sure how to broach the subject!!!!!

Hi Dan, congrats on the purchase. If you got it from Copart, it must have been a great deal. Do you know how/why it ended up there in the first place? Let me know if you want some help with the initial work, tune-up, oil, detailing..etc.

Galaxie and full size Ford fastbacks are incredibly rare and can be desirable with the right options.  Sounds like you may have got a winner!

It ain't a land yacht...I thought you had bought a Lincoln Continental before I opened the thread.  Now THERE is a land yacht!

We need video of this moment, I would suggest some sort of jewlery and then something about 'it followed me home'.
You must have been married a while as you've learned as I have that it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission :pbj

Nice find, looks like it's got the rare 'hovering hood' option?

Yeah, that's what I did when I recently purchase my 71 F100 truck.  it took my wife over a month to get over that one!

Good luck.

I love those, my Grandfather had a 68 and my Uncle had a 70 Galaxy fastback, I think my Uncle's was a 390 and my Granddad's was a 302 but they were cool cars. Nice find. What is carpart auction?

Married to Tara, that makes me the TARA-fied one!

Well another day has passed and still have not found the right way to mention the recent purchase, and now after reading some of the suggestions I'm not sure this is going to fair well for me. something tells me the forgivness bribe may cost more than the car. Both of my parents drove these while I was young, spent many a road trip in the backseat of these.
John, Thanks for the offer to help get her road worthy, I'm not sure of the condition of the car, It runs but not sure how well, My sister has it in stored at her shop, she says it's rough but for the price I knew that was coming, I took the gamble buying it because it was built in Los Angeles, sold in Los Angeles, and most recent title was Arizona, so I figured ( hoped ) not a rust bucket, It sold with a clear title so it was sold by a private seller not an insurance company.
Tarafied, CoParts is a national auction house for cars trucks motorcycles etc. If you go online to there site you can enter the year and make of the car you like and see if any are being sold off across the country. The cars that are sold are usually from insurance companys selling the totaled vehicles to get back some of there loss, also wrecking yards clearing out decent cars, car dealers, repair shops, private car flippers etc. Be careful it is addicting I find myself checking inventory all of the time, there are some decent cars rolling though there.

AHA!  There is your solution.  Play up on her emotions and your attachment to the car when you were young and the fond memories of family outings, blah, blah, blah, it was a great price, they never come up for sale, etc., but definitely play up the family memory angle, past AND future.

Don't insinuate it's another project car, which in her mind only serves to vacuum money from her wallet.   If you have a separate bank account that she does not have access to, consider telling her it cost half of what you actually paid.

Nice car.

So......if she hasn't missed the money, just tell her it was a gift.....and that gives you more time to explain the checkbook balance. And....where do we send the flowers?

makes sense. a gift from you sister, since she has it now, and your parents use to drive them.

These are some brilliant points, I'm building my confidence level, you guys are alright.  Tom I'm thinking you may have been down this road as your plot is very convincing the part about the blah, blah, blah!!! had me rolling.
I am glad this thing has a big back seat as I may be spending some time there before this is over. It wouldn't be the first time I've slept in my car after a trip to Vegas either.
Tarafied, back away from the coparts site it is dangerous. If the car is being sold by a private seller there may be a hidden reserve.( you wont know until the auction has ended either.) most insurance companys don't set a reserve as they want the cars gone regardless. trust me you won't be the only bidder, there are alot of gear heads watching these auctions and if it is a cool car it will get bid up. oh and another point the guy selling the car can bid on it as well to make sure it doesn't sell to low, and to protect his investment.

If the back seat becomes too small there is always a spare bedroom in that massive trunk  :dh    Looks like a solid purchase.  SWMBO may be angry at first but they always get over it, sometimes it takes longer for others though.  Hopefully yours is understandable especially if you use the excuse that your family had a few before.

I don't know your wife but I imagine you were a gearhead already when you guys met and said I do, so she has agreed to take you for better or worse. And I bet she is guilty of such things as well... just based on my own experience anyway I think you'll be okay!
Now, I like the make her feel guilty method, tell it is a surprise for her! You guys can take both cars to car shows together now!!! If she gets mad you have the defense that you were just trying to share your interests with her, how can she get mad at you? (yeah I know, there is always a way for a women to get mad)
