Fit?
« on: February, 14, 2010, 12:36:13 PM »
Has anyone used a reproduction door?  Just wondering how they fit?  I've not heard the greatest things in that department.

However, my buddy looked in his barn...he has a couple of good driver doors but all the passenger doors he has are in as bad a shape as mine.

I've checked the local Craigs List with no luck and also checked with Mustang Mania looking for a decent used one with no luck so it's looking like a repop is going to be my only option.

I used them on a 67. They were not horrible. Had to work them a bit, but not near as much as a junk door.

Don't be scared. :scar

Cool...I may go that route then.  Sure as heck would be easier than trying to find an original in decent shape.

Luckily my driver's door was good, just had to replace one small bit in the front corner.

Be sure to check what you think is the "good" door for cracking and rust around the area the lower hinge bolts on.

Seen some pretty decent doors be ugly there.

Both of my doors are repro's. The driver door took a good bit of work to make it fit, but the pass door fit really nice!

Thats impressive Mark, especially as many times as they have been blown off...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH

uhh...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH  @ Mark and Rick.

And to get back on track; the doors on my '70 are both repops.  The driver fit really well, the passenger needed some work and a little reshaping of the frame to match the contour of the fender edge.  They were both missing internal holes for mounting handles, door panels, etc.  But not a big deal really.

I bought 2 new doors for my 66.  The drivers side fit close but the pass. side needed alot of work where the door meets the top of the fender.  I had a big gap there.  The body guy added metal to it and it looks great.  If you go the repop route I would buy the ford tooling.  I bought the cheaper stuff and got what I paid for.

Unfortunately, Ford tooling doors aren't made.  However, Dynacorn makes doors now.  I have a Golden Legion driver's door which is pretty good.

OEM always fits better, but keep in mind our standards in regard to fit and panel gaps have exceeded the original design and capability of even OEM parts.

There was a late 60's era magazine picture floating around that clearly showed very poor fitting parts on obviously brand new cars coming out of the factory.  So not talking about dealer stock (lower quality fit) or overseas repop, but no kidding factory panel seams that sucked.

Not saying that's an excuse to accept sub par repro parts, just saying its never going to be a perfect fit with any part you source.
