Rear Disc Brakes: Explorer vs. "Cobra"
« on: February, 07, 2010, 09:07:42 PM »
I suppose I'm sort of a lurker/step-child in this forum.  I'm restoring my 68 Cougar and trying to decide on a couple of things.  I'm looking at upgrading the rear end and have some questions about disc brake kits.  Are the calipers from the Explore the same or similar to the "Cobra" brakes?  More specifically, is the e-brake set up the same (internal drum)?

Also, any reason one is better than the other?

Thanks!

I have the explorer discs on mine, yes internal drum and I do believe they are the same calipers as well.

NO. they are different.

The GT/Cobra setup does not have the internal "brake drum" e-brake. It has the e-brake integrated into the caliper. The Cobra setup uses 11.65" vented rotors, while the GT uses ~10.5" solid rotors.

Not sure if the exploder setup is solid or vented or the size...

Explorer rotors are 11.22" and .470" thick, solid units.

Another choice might be Lincoln Continental/Mk7/ SVO Mustang rear discs, they are ~11.4", very thick and vented.

I'm not the biggest fan of solid rotors, "just because", heck, it's the rear brakes, it doesn't really matter.

Check out the Mk7 brakes:

I got my kit thru Currie, website shows them as 11" rotors
