Coil location
« on: February, 01, 2010, 07:34:39 AM »
Here's a couple shot of my coil location.  The problem I see with the first pic is the possible interference with the coil's top being so close to the sparkplug wires.  Is this a possible issue that I need to avoid?

2nd pic has the clamp relocated to a lower hole but will not all the coil to sit vertically, thus angled.

If I had a choice, I'd prefer to keep it vertical but maybe this isn't going to happen?

I have mine mounted the same as you have in the first picture.

I've never found that good plug wires crossfire. Old / crappy ones, but not good ones.

Mount it vertical, with those wires you won't have an issue.

I agree with mounting it vertical.  Can you lower it some, so it's not as close to the plug wires?

Well, I can always try it vertically for awhile to see what happens.  Can't lower it too much more due to bottom hitting the powersteering pump.

What about mounting it to the inner fenders away from heat and vibration?  Depends on the look you are going for though. Some coils were mounted to the intake manifold, which may be another option.

That's the way it was/is on my BB 460 Craig.

A can or two of rustoleum and you'll have that 460 looking as good as new. :lol :lol

Nah, Don't like horizontal mounted coils.  I'll try the pic A attempt.  Gonna try to modify the clamp to allow the coil to drop down a little more.

If your coil didn't have that huge erector set on top, that would help...

you could mount it on the back of the head if you want to clean up the front of the motor. With the P/S pump mount in the front on my setup, i brought the wires thru the firewall and ran the coil wire right to the rear of the motor.

I need to figure out coil placement as well.  Right now I have it sitting on the a/c compressor bracket just to make the car drivable, but once the compressor is on, with p/s, I'll have a hard time fitting it anywhere.  I have a 69 C9OX alum intake and it doesn't fit between the holly fuel rail and the intake in the normal spot sitting horizontal on the passenger side of the intake, and it doesn't fit behind the alternator on the passenger head.

I'll have to see how it goes once I have everything back on the engine.

You could always ditch the solenoid in favor of a mini starter, and put the coil in its place.  Works good for me.

If that last post was for me, I actually do have a mini starter, but kept the solenoid up on the apron because I have all factory wiring otherwise.  I'll talk to the guy I bought my wires from (Alex Denysenko) and see if I can get a longer wire to put the coil over there on the apron.  I guess I would need to route the ignition wires over there too.  Not a big deal, just have to look at how to do it neatly.

You do realize that you don't need that contraption on top of the coil, right? That will make the coil much shorter, and you can mount it like you have it.

It just means you use a different fitting on your coil wire than you do on the rest of the wires.  No big deal if you're making custom wires, which I assume you are.
