Author Topic: Back Home - Subframes and Other Stuff (Read 505 times)

Picked my car back up from the shop to have work done that was beyond me and my tools.

I sure wish I had the money that everybody saves by working on their own cars.

I will definitely be doing all of the mechanical work myself. Always something to work on (disc brakes, locker, etc..).

Based on all of the stories I hear, I guess I was fortunate to have a shop that took my car just three weeks ago and completed all of the following:

1. Repaired and painted a rust through issue on lower right quarter (the paint matched perfectly).
2. Repaired and painted cowl area behind passenger side door (a section of seam sealer fell off and exposed surface rust).
3. Completely removed the front end and realigned all panels. The previous owner had dropped the front/raised the back too much. I started having contact issues (hood to fenders, passenger door to fender, etc..).
4. Repaired/painted the front valance (bad skim coat prior to painting).
5. Polished out the strange water marks on all upper surfaces. Not sure what falls out of the sky in California (my car's previous home) that etched in to the paint.
6. Installed TinMan subframe connectors.
7. Replaced starter solenoid. Not sure what happened there. They had an issue when they started it today.
8. Repaired broken weld on caster rod adjusting bracket.
9. Touched up areas that needed it.

I would have to say that the subframe connectors made a huge difference. I could actually tell that my suspension was working instead of the body flexing. No more rattles and bouncing around.

Man, it's gonna be sooo much fun at the track next year!

Are those SFC's a heavy gauge metal?

Like I said before... thanks goodness you are done with car shows.

It looks GREAT in that last picture Skip! Maybe I should just swing by your place this weekend instead of you coming by here, just so I can see it.

The subframes are made from 2x2 11 gauge steel.

It may be late summer before it hits the track.

I dropped too much coin today for the work that was done but it was all pretty much preservation work (except for the polish).

Brakes come next.

Told the wife that my retirement savings is getting cut into.

Good thing she does not want as much work done on her as I have had done on the car.

The guy at work gave me another sack of "stuff" so you have more to chose from. There was even a cam degree wheel in the sack. I will keep that.

We have some running to do on Saturday. I will give you a call when we get back and we can figure out who is going where from there.

George was interested in coming along to see what you are up to.

P.S. Thanks for the compliment. I am still envious of all the others cars that everybody else has. I just need to find someone that has a car like Mark's that is interested in trading.

Don't forget your paint job looks better than mine and you have been hitting the track.

I just have to drain my account a little a time. I figured around $500 a month.

January - brakes $500
February - Detroit locker $500
March - Roll Bar $600
April -Seats $800
May - broke
Take two months off, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
August - might be able to take it

Tin Man subframe connectors are the BOMB.

I' installed a set on my buddy's 67. Perfect fit, well thought out and nicely executed fabrication.

I totally agree. I have them on Scary and love them.
