Author Topic: About my Indy Pace coupe (Read 373 times)

We bought the 64.5 Indy coupe off ebay in 2000. The seller didn't know what he had. It was an ok looking running car. Drove it home to SLC from Stockton, CA. Into storage until it was stripped, blasted, put on rotisserie in 2003. Languished until really got serious in 2006. Took silver at first MCA National in Las Vegas, Sept. 2006.
2007 we trailered it 14,000 miles around the country, Concord CA to Augusta, GA and several shows in between. It earned gold at all those shows in 2007. Gold in two MCA shows in 2008 and two in 2009.
Now only one point to earn until it can enter Conservator class.
Plan to take it to Mustang OK MCA National in June. If earns Gold in Concours Trailered then it'll finally be in Conservator class in Bellevue in July.

Since it's not a big block, not a race car, not flashy modified, its saving grace is being a piece of Mustang history.

I assume you guys knew it was a pace car when you bought it, or do you mean the seller did not know the value/history of the car when he sold it?

I had attempted to buy another Pace car previously in 1998, but the sale fell through. So I had learned some things about pace cars and had a file sent to me by Steve Grant who had restored a pace car.

The ebay ad for my INDY was only "white 64.5 coupe." In the ebay ad was a picture of the original door tag. I recognized the color code "C" as being Pace car white. Dates and VIN in line to be a pace car too.
The seller didn't know it was a pace car.
I had a friend in CA go look at it and verify that it is a pace car.
It has the radiator support PACE CAR etching.
The seller was stunned after we exchanged $$ and told him.

Steve is a great dude and very knowledgeable when it comes to the pace cars. Now if you had bought an original 289 Cobra from a poor old lady for 200 dollars because her husband just died of cancer and left her penniless sad story sad story sad story bla bla bla only to flip the Mustang just for profit then I might have a problem with that. But you found a piece of Mustang history that otherwise could have been destroyed and saved it for all to enjoy. And when I say "saved it" that is an understatement. Beautiful car!

I said the guy didn't know what he had, not that I got a great deal. There was another interested party who had offered him more than his reserve to close the deal. He obviously knew what it is.
When the seller told me the price he had been offered, I almost gave up. But a good friend said to me "in a few years that amount probably won't mean much and you'll have lost the car, how will you feel?"
I actually didn't believe there was another interested party and thought the seller was just wanting to mess with me.
Later I learned, via VMF, there was someone planning to buy the car who was pretty mad I got it out from under him.
I only got it because my friend in CA was able to courier the money and receive the car faster than the guy in MI would have gotten the cash to him.

I paid probably more that it was worth at the time, but in the long run have no regrets.

Steve G and Charles T have been valuable resources in the restoration.

When we thought we were about done just before it's first MCA show in Las Vegas I sent Charles a bunch of photos. He kindly sent back a list of 40 things wrong with it....
Frustrating at the time. Invaluable now.

And that first Silver award was well-earned in my opinion. You guys were real close to getting a Gold!
