Author Topic: Any tips on installing flywheel, clutch, tranny, etc ? (Read 393 times)

I just realized that I have never attached the flywheel, clutch and tranny to a motor prior to motor install so this is a new frontier for me. Oh joy!!!

This weekend I want to assemble the tranny to the motor and then the following weekend drop the motor into Shag. I made a set of motor stands so it will remain assembled and on the stands for the week.

Is this the correct sequence of tranny to motor-

1. Clean all grease or coatings off flywheel and pressure plate.
2. Position block plate.
3. Attach flywheel using thread sealer on bolts and torque to spec.
4. Install pilot bushing. Any tool required?
5. Install clutch disc and pressure plate with help of arbor and torque the 6 pressure plate to flywheel bolts.
6. Question: With release bearing already attached to clutch fork with anti rattle spring in place, do I install the bell housing to block and then tranny to bell or attach bell to tranny and attach complete to motor? Does it matter?

Misc questions-The supplier of the clutch bearing says "Don't grease the pilot bushing" What is
the harm of doing so? Is the concern about excessive grease hitting the clutch disc?

"Don't balance pressure plate to rest of motor" WTF?

In the shop manual it says "Do not lubricate the bearing hub" Are they referring to the pilot bushing?

I did bell to transmission, then onto the motor. But that was for an AOD to T5 swap in my Fox. Motor was still in the car.

I did clean the PP with a little acetone, but didn't do anything to the clutch disc.

The one thing I would recommend to make this job smooth, is to get your clutch disc as centered as you possibly can. Those little plastic alignment tools don't always do the trick. The one sent with my clutch was broken. I actually lined it up by the edge of the PP and it went in pretty well. If you wanted to go crazy, you could indicate the ID of the splines concentric...

I would put the bellhousing to the block first and make sure the back of the block and the bellhousing face is free of any burrs that could effect the bellhousing alignment. With the bellhousing on the block cut the heads off some 4-5" long bolts and screw them into the holes on the back of the bellhousing where the transmission bolts go. Then just slide the transmission on the bolts/studs and it will make your install much easier! I cut some slots in the top of mine so I can use a screwdriver to back them out if they are stubborn.

I'll be venturing down this exact road and I too am a newbie to manual trans cars, so I'll be watching this one pretty close! Mine will be a T56 installed with the motor in the car, so I am ready to get a few extra gray hairs during my install

As far as pilot bushing/bearing, it depends on what you use. The roller bearings typically come pre-greased, like this: http://www.americanmuscle.com/ford-pilotbearing-302.html

You can also opt for the Kevlar pilot bushings, but they are a bit more. No grease needed. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-ST50KPB/

It is a roller bearing input bearing.

65fast, Yes your guide trick is what I normally use when installing oil pans and other multiple bolt on items. A great idea for this application as well.

I have decided to wait and do most of this work Saturday the 19th and then drop the motor/trans assembly into Shag on Sun the 20th.

The input bearing is installed before the flywheel. I used a roller bearing and as previous mentioned it came pre-greased. You would not want to add grease to avoid the possibility of it getting on the clutch disc.

The line about lubricating the hub most likely has to do with the throwout bearing. They come pre-greased as well. Just liek with the pilot bearing, you would not want to add grease due to the risk of it ending up on the clutch.

I installed the bellhousing to the motor and then installed the transmission. I used the 4-5" bolt trick also. It is easier to leave the rubber boot off of the release lever while installing the transmission so you can look in to see the location of the throwout bearing relative to the input shaft.
