Alignment Setup
« on: November, 18, 2009, 08:19:48 AM »
Getting the Baer Tracker bump steer kit and wanted to get the alignment tools at the same time. What do I need? Caster camber gauge and quickset adapter? referencing SOT.

You mean this one - http://www.speedwaymotors.com/ECONOMY-CASTER-CAMBER-GAUGE,2699.html?

Never seen anything like that one. Looks like there is no scale on it so you will more than likely have to do some computing with the readings to figure out what the actualy caster or camber # is.  No idea though.  Could be a money saver, could be a PITA!  LOL.

does this do toe adjustments?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SPS-91000

These SPC Performance Pro Series FasTrax adjustable caster camber gauge kits are designed to fine-tune your alignment for optimal tracking and handling. They include a gauge and wheel mount that fits most 13 to 18 in. diameter wheels. The gauge will display camber +/- 4 degrees and caster from -4 degrees to +12 degrees.

I got this device for about $40: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/1934/Caster_Camber_Gauges

It is wonderfully simple and easy to use.  I highly recommend it!  It has served me and Pete very well!

Toe adjustments are done with a tape ruler or a toe gauge (a 1" box channel with a adjustable pointer at each end, which I created for about $30 in scrap steel).

Yeah, I wrote a big write-up of my toe gauge build on VMF, but I'm too inebriated right now to go search for it!  *LOL*

Toe is the simplest of the three settings to obtain.  A tape measure is really all that you need.

DIY alignment... how to go about aligning the rear tires with the front?

Using the factory pins, there's very little slop for adjustment.  I simply installed the leaf spring pin into the hole, and tightened everything up.

If your rear end is not factory...then I can't help you too much!

Last time I aligned my car, I tried to loosen the rear to correct it's very slight offset. The amount was negligible and would have been ignored on any other alignment.

The amount of movement was hardly worth the effort. I might have effected the thrust angle by .02 degrees.
