Best exhaust setup for Shag - suggestions?
« on: November, 11, 2009, 07:07:34 AM »
This is really pertaining more towards, long tube vs Shorty's vs Tri-y vs standard exhaust manifolds.   I do NOT want a real bad ass sounding exhaust system.  Too old for that crap.  Just want a nice healthy sound.   Using stock Z bar setup, modified by ORP.

A couple nights ago I listened to two cleveland motors fire up with one having hooker long tube while the other had stock exhaust manifolds.  Both motors had the same cam that I have.  Really disliked the long tube sound.  Too tinny, raspy, radical sounding.  I have to be careful that I don't drown my wife out of enjoying driving with me on our Nor Cal overnight cruises.

I was shocked on how much I like the more subtle sound the the stock cleveland exhaust manifold setup.

Wish I could find a local cleveland with shortys or Tri-Y to listen to.

What did the two cars have from the manifolds back? I've noticed the stainless exhausts seem to have more of a tinny sound to them as you mentioned.

At the very least, I'd use a good set of shorties.  That 4V motor needs to breathe.  And the shorties won't sound as raspy as full length headers.

Did both engines have the same mufflers?

Craig,

What do you currently have for the motor?

If you're interested..... gulp..... I have a set of factory 4V manifolds that I've been holding onto for what seems like an eternity.

I can't think of a better home for them if that's the road you decide to take.

Shipping would be painful, but you wouldn't be able to beat the price.

First, I'm sorry that I did not place this post in the exhaust board.  Oops.....

I believe both cars had Slowmaster 3 chamber mufflers but I'm inquiring as we speak.   Dave, if I go stock, I might hit you up.     Still need to consult with my engine builder as well.

Just confirmed... both cars did have Flowmaster 3 chambers.

AZPete would certainly recommend a backwards installed Cherry Bomb muffler.

Exhaust sounds are very personal.  The stock manifolds would tend to limit your engine's breathing ability, I would think.  Clevelands love to breathe!

Wow, Trying to find Tri-Y's or shortys to fit a cleveland is tough.  Still searching.

Try FPA and Doug's headers.

I'd be hesitant to make a decision based on anything you've heard through Flowmasters.  They sound raspy and blatty to begin with.

One thing i think, is that Flowmasters were in their prime with the fox body cars, on anything before and after, it just sounds like crap to me.

Thanks guys.   No matter what I pick, sounds like I should probably have them in place (sitting in engine compartment) when I drop in the engine.

Really?  Is the cleveland that much larger than the windsor?
I can fit my shorties in after the engine is in place.

I think you would be happy with headers and turbo mufflers...the blowmasters sound tinny and raspy no matter what.

I can't get over the sound of a Mopar small block or a 351C, either of them sound great, even with stock mufflers, so I'm sure you can find exactly what you're after. I've noticed that those 2 engines have a fairly similar sound...I hate glasspacks with a burning passion, but every Mopar I've heard with a decent set has had a sound that's hard to beat. Might be an idea?

I had a 351 4V with the stock exhaust manifolds in my old '68 FB and had to temporarily raise the engine out of the chassis in order to remove them.  It's a real tight fit.

I guess the clevors are a bit larger than the windsors then.

Whatever the case, I'm looking forward to hearing Shag's power plant!

Mark, just called them and they do not have anything for a Mustang / Clevo combination. Oh well....  but thanks for the attempt.

I think Rick posted a link similar to this one in another post:

http://www.stang-aholics.com/ShowItem/108383%2069%20-%2073%20Mustang%20351%20Cleveland%20Shorty%20Headers.aspx

After doing a little more study, I learn that these shorties are of Sanderson Brand who happens to be 20 minutes north of me near San Francisco.   I might go up and visit them.

Well my engine builder really hates shortys for they build up too much heat, etc and prefers that I get a set of stock manifolds and he'd port them to match the heads.

I had a thought: you could get the manifolds extrude honed!

That's a neat idea.  After your engine builder ports them, you could have them ceramic coated, too.

Why would a shorty build any more heat than a cast iron manifold?  It all depends on the coating.  A ceramic coated shorty will dissipate heat much faster than an uncoated stock manifold.

Don't go with the Sandersons.  They are not very well made.  That's what Robert (66benchcoupe on the VMF) used for a while and hated them.  They developed a million pin holes after just a couple years.

As soon as you said the long tubed Cleveland sounded "tinny", I immediately knew it had FLowmasters.  That's the mufflers, not the headers.  Also, I'll bet the one with stock logs had no H pipe, giving it a beefier sound.

No one has ever described the Dynomax Ultra Welds on Scary as Tinny.  I did have someone compare to the sound of a NASCAR sound, but never tinny.  Also converstations are easy to have unless I'm heavy into the throttle.
