Canton Oil Pan
« on: November, 03, 2009, 10:24:28 AM »
As I redo my engine I am looking at all aspects of the build.  I am currently running a stock pan and would like to increase the oil capacity and get a low profile 7-8 qt pan.  I am going with a HV oil pump to make sure the blower is properly lubricated.  I know Canto pans have a good reputation but they are kind of spendy for something that just holds the fluidl  Are Canton Oil pans really worth the money or are the $95 el' cheapo ebay 7 qt front sump pans good enough?

The car is maily street driven and will not likely see massive lateral g's.  Thanks for the input.

I would think that any larger capacity pan would do the trick. If you will not be turning laps and incurring high G side loads, then there is no real need for the high dollar pans with center trap doors etc...

My Dad fabs up all of his oil pans to be deep sump.  Puts all the baffles, etc in them himself.  So I don't see why the cheaper one wouldn't work.  I guess the biggest question would be about the finish on it.

It looks like a cheap one it is.  I don't care about the finish that much because I will have to weld an AN bung to it for the blower return line.  I'll get black and touch up the paint with a rattle can.  Thanks for the help guys.

IMO, I would look for an oil pan with a thick flange.  You will have better sealing with the thicker flange

Eh, I think the new one-piece, reinforced pan gaskets help eliminate that problem.

Eh, I think the new one-piece, reinforced pan gaskets help eliminate that problem.
Used one on my P.O.S. Ford Racing cheapo Chrome pan, It leaked pretty good in the back.  Put a canton on, and now theres no problem.  Ohh yea, i used the same gasket.  After i removed the chorme pan, i laid a straight edge down on it and was surprised how wavy the lip was.  The chrome one was torqued down while the motor was still on the stand.  So there shouldn't have been any problems.

Well I got a cheap pan from Flea Bay and will steal the metal supports that run along the side of the pan from my stock pan.  I will also check it out before putting it on.  If it doesn't look perfectly straight I will send it back.

It looks like my el cheapo pan may be leaking.  I just purchased a Canton pan and will intall it this evening.  I hope that solves the problem.  Every time I try to save a couple bucks on this car I end up regretting int.  :sad  I will say that the canton pan looks much nicer and should not hang down as low as the current pan.  I will even be able to plumb my blower return line into the dipstick tube hole.  I won't even have to drill and weld a bung in this pan.   :pbj

i've got the canton drag race pan.  the plating doesn't look that good (i'm suspect it would be rusty in a few years) however i'm going to scuff and paint it blue.

it also looks like a child welded it.

I've got the Canton 8qt.? also and got it powder coated, gald I did for such a hard to remove item. Came out great and hard to scratch. I decided to go black to make it blend in with the suspension/engine bay:

I too have the stock chrome pan with the PermaDry 1-piece gasket.  I noticed a small leak at the rear (not rear main seal though) while I have the car up on jackstands doing the trans swap.  I think a thicker flange would help sealing everything much easier.

Me too, but I'm going to get it powdercoated black as well.  Don't like the gold look with my car.
